$300 million in play: Powerball lottery numbers picked

By Gil Aegerter, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Powerball lottery jackpot jumped to $400 million after nobody won in Saturday night's drawing. The numbers drawn Saturday were?21-24-36-42-45 with Powerball 15.

There were no winners of the big prize, and the jackpot for the next drawing is now estimated at $400 million, Powerball officials said.?That would be worth more than $230 million before taxes if taken as a lump sum, Powerball said.

Tickets worth $2 million each were sold in Florida and Texas for Saturday's drawing, and $1 million tickets were sold in five states.

The pot had reached $300 million, bringing out lots of ticket buyers aiming to strike it rich.

?We?ve got the winning ticket, right here,? one man buying a ticket at a San Diego-area store told NBCSanDiego.com before the drawing. ?It?s going to help a lot of people.?

Or not.?

While $400 million is a lot, it?s not close to a lottery record. The largest prize ever was $656 million won in the Mega Millions contest on March 30, 2012. The biggest Powerball jackpot was $590.5 million, won in Florida in May by an 84-year-old widow.

Dust Rooms In a Circular Pattern to Avoid Extra Work

Dust Rooms In a Circular Pattern to Avoid Extra Work

Dusting is a pretty mindless chore, so it's easy to zone out and forget which parts of the room you already cleaned, particularly if you're in a dimmer room where the dust is harder to see. To keep yourself focused, try dusting in a circular pattern around the room.

Julia Edelstein at Real Simple suggests starting in one corner of the room, working around the perimeter in a circle, and then continuing to spiral inwards toward the center of the room. As long as you remember your starting point, you'll never do the same piece of furniture twice, or miss a piece entirely. The same principle can be applied to a other household tasks like vacuuming floors or sanitizing bathroom surfaces. It might not make dusting any more exciting, but it can help you get the job done with a minimal amount of work.

Cancer risk models tested

Women, wouldn't you like to know your precise risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer? And wouldn't you like to know what changes you could make in your life to reduce that risk?

Researchers from the National Cancer Institute would like to help you. They've just published a study in the journal PLOS Medicine that takes a significant step toward that goal.

Ruth Pfeiffer, a senior investigator in the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, and colleagues focused on the predictive value of more than a dozen variables, including a woman's body mass index, number of children she has, how long she took birth control pills, whether she used hormone therapy to treat symptoms of menopause, family history of gynecological cancers, and use of cigarettes and alcohol. They examined those variables in tens of thousands of women who participated in two long-term health studies ? the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study and the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial ? and used statistics to look for patterns that could explain why some women were diagnosed with cancer and others were not.

The breast cancer model performed the best. Among a group of 56,638 women who were part of the Nurses' Health Study, the researchers predicted a total of 2,930 breast cancer cases. In real life, there were 2,934. That was slightly more accurate than the NCI's Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool, which forecast a total of 2,947 breast cancer diagnoses. However, although the new model got the total number almost exactly right, it "significantly underestimated the number of breast cancers in premenopausal women," the study noted.

The model for ovarian cancer worked pretty well too. It predicted 406 cases, about 8 percent higher than the 377 cases that were actually diagnosed.

The model for endometrial cancer was further off the mark. It anticipated 640 cases among the nurses, though in real life there were only 532 cases. However, the research team noted that theirs was the first published model to predict an absolute risk for endometrial cancer, which is the fourth most common cancer in women.

Generally speaking, women with lower BMIs had lower cancer risk. Compared with women with similar BMIs who were nonsmokers, smokers had higher cancer risk too.

Women who took birth control pills tended to have higher cancer risk than women who didn't. So did women who used hormone replacement therapy. Women who had three or four children tended to have lower cancer risk than women who had one, and it helped if they had their first child in their 20s instead of in their 30s or 40s.

All of the women used to develop the models were white and at least 50 years old, and none of them had mutations in their BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that are known to boost the risk of breast or ovarian cancer. That means the results wouldn't necessarily apply to all women, they wrote.

In theory, reliable models could help women make important decisions about their health, especially in cases where a certain action decreases the risk of one type of cancer but raises it for another. Here's an example Pfeiffer and her colleagues described in the study: A woman with a high risk of breast cancer might consider taking tamoxifen to reduce that risk. But first, she might like to know her risk of endometrial cancer, since the drug would increase her risk for that.

In a Perspective essay that accompanied the PLOS Medicine study, two experts praised the idea of developing models to predict cancer risk. "What we want from models is that they help us make better decisions, leading to better outcomes for our patients," they wrote. But the jury is still out on the best way to judge any model's strengths and weaknesses, they added.

Priebus: GOP Not Divided Over Immigration Reform

Contrary to news reports, comprehensive immigration reform is not splintering the Republican Party, Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, tells Newsmax TV.

"It's bizarre. I don't find it to be dividing the party," Priebus tells Newsmax in an exclusive interview. "What you have is a consensus in the party that we need immigration reform, and everyone agrees on it."

He notes how the issue has brought together members of the party with such divergent views as Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

"Now, we know that Rand Paul's version of what that looks like is going to be different than Lindsey Graham's, but you do have consensus in the party that we need serious immigration reform," Priebus said.

In June, the Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill on a 68-32 vote that was backed by 14 Republicans. It includes provisions for a pathway to citizenship and increased border security.

The vote, which came on legislation introduced by the bipartisan Gang of Eight senators in April, sent the bill to the House of Representatives for consideration.

But the GOP-controlled House has said that it will not vote on such a huge Senate bill, opting instead to address immigration reform through individual pieces of legislation.

And House Speaker John Boehner, who vowed that the lower chamber would not take an "Obamacare-like" approach to immigration reform, has pledged to not bring any such legislation to the floor unless it has the support of most of his party's members.

Republicans have consistently attacked the Senate bill, saying it amounts to little more than amnesty for 11 million illegal immigrants, that it does little to strengthen the nation's borders, and that the Senate Democratic leadership was rushing complex legislation into law.

Priebus says he is not sure what form any final legislation would take, but it should address such issues as tougher border security, worker visas ? an enhanced E-Verify system ? and a discussion on the legalization of people who are already here.

"Maybe not necessarily citizenship, but certainly a good, strong debate over the issue of legalization, and most people in the party are ready for that conversation."

NASA turns 55. What's next for the space agency?

Fifty-five years ago Monday, President Eisenhower signed the Space Act, authorizing the creation of NASA. Since then, the space agency has grown from its Sputnik-shaded beginnings to studying the full scope of the heavens. What will the next 55 years bring?

By Liz Fuller-Wright,?Correspondent / July 31, 2013

Information from three telescopes was combined to create this image of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a small satellite galaxy of the Milky Way located about 160,000 light years from Earth. X-rays from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue) show hot regions created by these winds and shocks, while infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (red) outline where the dust and cooler gas are found. The optical light from the 2.2-m Max-Planck-ESO telescope (yellow) in Chile shows where ultraviolet radiation from hot, young stars is causing gas in the nebula to glow.

Within a year, NASA began operations as a hastily-cobbled-together mix of of civilian aeronautics and military intercontinental ballistic missile research. Now, it's a federal agency examining the entire sweep of the sky.

From its hasty beginnings, NASA has flown 157 missions???86 still ongoing ??visiting almost every large heavenly body between the Sun and Pluto, monitoring the Earth from space, peering into the heart of our galaxy's central black hole, and looking out to distant stars and galaxies. NASA has sent 301 astronauts into space, and is currently training another nine?who will soon fly.

We have a permanent human presence in orbit and 12 men have left footprints on the Moon. NASA's satellites have orbited Mercury, Venus, Earth, the Moon, Mars, the asteroid Vesta, Jupiter, and Saturn; flown by Uranus and Neptune; and another is en route to Pluto. NASA's telescopes are listening to every corner of the universe and looking at billions of stars; they have found hundreds of planets orbiting other stars, plus countless pulsars, black holes, supernovae, and more. NASA and its sister organizations around the world are examining the secrets of the universe, from tiny grains of space dust to dark matter to unthinkably enormous galaxies.

"The 20th?century was quite an amazing time for advances in science and technology, particularly in spaceflight," says Bill Barry, NASA's chief historian. Just 55 years before NASA's creation, in 1903, the Wright brothers flew the first airplane in Kitty Hawk, N.C. And now, 55 years later, we've visited the moon, "reconnoitered the solar system ? and revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos and our place in it," he says.

"Apollo, getting to the moon, developing industries and building infrastructure, exploring our solar system, the Earth, and the larger universe ? that's a pretty good list of accomplishments for 55 years," says Dr. Barry. "It's a pretty good investment for the chunk of money we spent in the '60s plus the maintenance-level investment we've made since then."

The price of exploration

Space spending in 1957 had amounted to around $35 million ($282 million in 2013 dollars), but Sputnik fears loosened federal purse strings. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration officially began its mission October 1, 1958, after President Dwight Eisenhower signed it into law on July 29. ?In its first year, NASA's budget was about 10 times the 1957 space budget, and it grew rapidly.

Lohan completes rehab stint; more therapy ordered

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lindsay Lohan has completed her court-ordered stay in rehab and must continue therapy into late next year, a judge said Wednesday.

The "Liz & Dick" star must meet with a therapist at least three times a week until November 2014, Superior Court Judge James R. Dabney said, following the treatment recommendation of Richard Taite, founder and CEO of Cliffside Malibu, the rehab facility where Lohan was recently residing.

Taite wrote Dabney a letter stating the need for Lohan to remain in therapy.

"Our entire clinical team is in unanimous agreement that if these sessions are not required by the court and attendance verified once a month to ensure accountability, it is a setup for almost certain failure," Taite wrote.

The judge's ruling calls for Lohan to receive 18 months of therapy and gives her credit for the three months of rehab that she has just completed.

If the actress is traveling, she can meet with her therapist via videoconferencing software, the judge said.

Lohan, 27, was not present at the hearing meant to update Dabney on her progress.

The actress remains on probation for a pair of cases involving the theft of a necklace and lying to police about driving when her sports car slammed into a dump truck on Pacific Coast Highway in June 2012.

Taite praised Lohan's progress in recent months.

"We couldn't be happier with the progress Ms. Lohan has made in building a solid foundation from which to continue the excellent work she has begun here at Cliffside Malibu," he wrote.

Lohan started her treatment at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage and was later transferred to Cliffside Malibu. Her next court date is scheduled for November 2014.

The actress's latest film, "The Canyons" will have a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles in August. She has signed a deal on OWN to appear in an eight-part series based on her life and will be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey in August.

(WASHINGTON, August 1, 2013) The American Society of Hematology (ASH) will honor Katherine A. High, MD, of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with the 2013 E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize for her unparalleled work to identify the molecular basis of hemophilia and to develop novel genetic therapies to treat the disorder. Named for the late Nobel Prize laureate and past Society president E. Donnall Thomas, MD, this lectureship and prize recognizes pioneering research achievements in hematology that have helped move the field forward.

Dr. High will present her lecture, "Sailing to Ithaca: Gene Therapy's Odyssey from Investigational Agent to Therapeutic Product," at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, at the 55th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans. Her lecture will explore the use of gene therapies for the treatment of inherited disorders, discussing the therapeutic successes of laboratory and small-scale clinical studies conducted over the last two decades as well as the obstacles that remain to bring this seemingly straightforward yet extremely nuanced concept to successful clinical application. During her lecture Dr. High will also discuss the sustained clinical improvements yielded in the setting of inherited retinal degenerative diseases and of hemophilia B by the use of in vivo gene transfer with adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors. She will reflect on how a rigorous understanding of the interaction of AAV vectors with the human immune response, and other homeostatic mechanisms, has allowed investigators to harness the power of gene identification and gene delivery vectors to provide long-lasting therapeutic outcomes for previously incurable diseases.

As a leading expert in gene therapy of hemophilia, Dr. High has dedicated her career to bringing this novel and complex concept to fruition. Her work has ranged from basic biochemical investigations of clotting factors, virology of the AAV viruses as relevant to vector design, dissection of the human immune response to vector and transgene proteins, development of predictive large animal models, and iterative careful and highly instructive clinical trials. Her more than 15 years of investigation regarding the feasibility of gene therapy for hemophilia has culminated in successful clinical studies utilizing AAV vector-mediated gene transfer for the treatment of hemophilia B.

Dr. High is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, the William H. Bennett Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and an attending physician at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed her Hematology fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. High was named as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator in 2003 and is also an elected member of both the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. She is a member and former Councillor of ASH, a former president of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy, and a member of the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

"Dr. High is unquestionably a leader in gene therapy and has made remarkable, ground-breaking contributions to the field, demonstrating creativity, determination, and the ability to overcome numerous obstacles," said ASH President Janis L. Abkowitz, MD, of the University of Washington. "Through her countless discoveries, Dr. High has transformed the notion of utilizing genetically engineered mechanisms for treatment of incurable inherited disorders from a distant vision to reality."

Dawn Approach and Toronado ready for Sussex Stakes ... - Bettor

Dawn Approach and Toronado ready for Sussex Stakes ? Horseracing news

Dawn Approach and Toronado are all set to clash in the Sussex Stakes (British Champions Series) (Group 1) at Goodwood in England on Wednesday, July 31, 2013.

Both runners have been up against each other in the past, but the former of the two has been successful on each occasion. However, their most recent clash at Ascot proved to be quite a close one and they were separated by just a short head distance in the end.

Talking about that race, Toronado?s trainer Richard Hughes said, ?It wasn't the bump as much as that two strides before I had said go to him and I was so happy with him. Kevin [Manning] got a bump as well but he bounced off me to keep straight. I was so disappointed for him at Ascot because this horse deserves his Group 1. He's heavier and stronger physically from Ascot but the ground is an unknown - he loves fast ground.?

The three-year-old colt has got a very good record in the sport and has performed brilliantly since making his debut in the sport. He does not have much experience, but knows how to handle pressure at the highest level. The start to his career was excellent, as he managed to win four consecutive contests.

However, he had not appeared in any race against Dawn Approach until that point. When that happened, the Richard Hannon trainee was unable to continue his winning streak. Despite that, his camp is hopeful that he has the ability to make history by beating one of the best runners of the modern time.

On the other hand, Dawn Approach?s trainer Jim Bolger said about him, ?I'm very happy with him. We didn't give him much of a break after Ascot as he gets fresh very quickly. He is very well balanced and he is going there in very good shape.?

Although the three-year-old challenger from Ireland failed to continue his winning streak in the sport, when he was defeated at Epsom, he is still ranked highly by the bookies and the punters. He has got a phenomenal strike rate and it will be difficult to stop him from winning at Goodwood.
