Article Published: Friday 28 September 2012

Former Wales centre Gavin Henson is set to make his comeback for London Welsh against Stade Francais in the European Challenge Cup on the 13th of October.

London Welsh plan to use Henson as a fly half bute he injured his cheekbone in a pre-season friendly match against the Scarlets .

Henson has missed the last month of rugby with a fractured cheekbone but has still trained with the Premiership newcomers.

"Gavin is training with us at the moment," head coach Lyn Jones told BBC Radio Wales.

"He's back on the field and running around, but just no contact yet."

Thirty-year-old Henson joined London Welsh in he off season after he was sacked by Pro 12 Rugby club Cardiff Blues in April.

"He's going to be fit for contact on 6 October and he's going to be involved, probably, in our first Amlin game against Stade Francais," added Jones who coached Henson at the Ospreys.

"He's excited and we're all excited to have him back. "

"We are just utilising him at the moment, and he's helping some of our back-three players improve their kicking and he's enjoying that responsibility.

London Welsh have been one of the surprise packages of this season's Aviva Premiership and have played four matches and won two already.

How To Teach Creative Writing To Young Children - A Teacher's Idea

Teaching children to write?creatively is not something that you can complete at any one particular grade level. It involves a series of planned situations and activities that gradually lead to independent writing. From as early as preschool a child's writing begins to take shape as he learns to interpret print. As he grows his understanding of that print is translated into a greater command of the language. Essentially, as he progresses through the grade levels his writing unfolds as a more personal stamp.

As a teacher my goal is to develop the writing skills?of my students. This means that I must slowly direct each child to writing independently. To do so I must model good writing, write with them collaboratively, guide their efforts and allow them to work on their own. These stages are summed up under the following headings:

  1. Modeled Writing
  2. Shared Writing
  3. Guided Writing
  4. Independent Writing

1. Modeled Writing

In this initial step I must demonstrate to my students that writing is the capturing of thoughts. As I think aloud I record what I actually want to say. Of course, conventions of spelling and grammar are very important, but these can be overlooked only to facilitate the free flow of ideas. Also it is rather helpful to students to generate a list of needed words on the chalkboard. As I model good writing behaviors I direct their focus on the importance of thinking through what I want to say.

Shared Writing allows the students to contribute ideas to create one piece with the assistance of the teacher as scribe. This allows them to view the behavior of writers during the writing process.

3. Guided Writing

In guided writing the teacher continually provides feedback to students to monitor the writing process. As students write the teacher asks questions that provoke thought and generate ideas. The teacher may look at writing conventions and word choice of students or even the completeness of ideas expressed. This guidance is what makes students become better writers!

Students are provided with frequent opportunities to write independently. They experiment with language and tweak their writing skills to resemble good writers. As students write on their own they learn how to edit their drafts in an effort to create a polished piece.?

Bo decision allows China to focus on succession

BEIJING (AP) ? With disgraced politician Bo Xilai expelled from the party, his career effectively ended with a slew of criminal charges that are certain to result in convictions, China's ruling communists can finally focus on the crucial task of ensuring a smooth transition to a new generation of leaders.

On Friday, the party's decision-making Politburo finally took long-awaited action on the scandal that had loomed over Chinese politics for more than half a year, leveling criminal charges against Bo that range from corruption to sexual affairs to abetting the cover-up of a murder by his wife. At the same time, the 25-member Politburo also made the long overdue announcement of the opening of the party congress, now scheduled for Nov. 8, when President Hu Jintao will step down as party boss and Vice President Xi Jinping will succeed him.

The twin pronouncements are connected: Getting Bo out of the way was seen as crucial to healing rifts in the party and allowing Xi and a new leadership to come to power without the overhang of a messy scandal.

"Having settled this contentious issue, the party leadership is in a position to start the party congress with a facade of unity and also harmony," said Willy Lam, a political analyst at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Friday's announcement also came on the eve of National Day, which commemorates Mao Zedong's Oct. 1, 1949, declaration of victory in the country's civil war and the dawn of the People's Republic of China. Despite China's explosive economic growth and breakneck modernization since then, the events surrounding Bo's fall from grace show Mao's party remains very much the opaque and powerful force in Chinese political life.

"Again, this is politics overriding legal and judicial principles," Lam said, noting that the decision came from the Politburo convening behind closed doors instead of judges in an open court.

"The elite politics are still done" in secrecy, Lam said.

One of China's most ambitious and best-known politicians, Bo was brought down after a trusted aide disclosed that Bo's wife had murdered a British businessman. Bo was dismissed as party chief of the vibrant inland megacity of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

The charges against Bo, however, go much further, spanning more than a decade and including allegations that he took bribes, abused his power and had improper relationships with several women. Given the party's control of the courts, the indictment ensures the flamboyant 63-year-old's political career is finished.

The criminal proceedings against Bo are likely to start soon, with steps being taken to remove him from the National People's Congress, China's top legislature. Delegates to that body have immunity from arrest and prosecution.

As the son of a founding father of communist China, Bo grew up with a broad web of contacts within the party, government and military. Unlike most of the other members of the stiff and remote senior leadership, the telegenic Bo also was popular with the public, using a crackdown on organized crime in Chongqing to court publicity.

That also made him a polarizing figure among the party elite. In recent months, as speculation swirled about Bo's fate and the debate among top leaders dragged on, it is likely that his allies argued for the administrative equivalent of a slap on the wrist, while the top leadership represented by Hu, Vice President Xi and Premier Wen Jiabao saw Bo as a threat that needed to be eliminated.

The decision to level such a harsh punishment is a sign that the top leaders won out, once again, said Jeremy Paltiel, an expert on Chinese politics at Canada's Carleton University.

"My guess is that Hu and Wen wanted to crush Bo, not just smother him," Paltiel said. "They got their wish, even at the cost of a month's delay in the congress."

The state-run Global Times said in an editorial Saturday that it is in the people's fundamental interest for the party congress to convene smoothly and that the decisions about Bo provide certainty.

"It is conducive to the current situation and also to the accumulation of political certainty," the editorial read.

Bo is the first Politburo member to be purged and handed over to prosecutors since Hu ousted Shanghai party secretary Chen Liangyu in 2006 for corruption. Bo's case, however, was more politically divisive and delicate than Chen's, or any other recent case in which senior officials have been charged with corruption.

Ultimately, the decision on Bo was part of the overall horse-trading relating to the succession, said Steve Tsang, director of the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham in Britain.

"It probably means that as a result they negotiated something else that is better for the leadership succession," Tsang said.

Bo's removal is seen as strengthening Xi's position, leaving him the undisputed leader of the party's "princelings," as the offspring of high-ranking communist elders are known, and eliminating a challenger who had threatened party unity. He may face some opposition from Bo's supporters among party hard-liners, but Friday's announcement shows his influence was waning fast.

Friday's closed-door Politburo meeting also likely finalized other arrangements for the congress, including the much-contested lineup for the new leadership as well as for a commission that oversees the party's control of the military. Those decisions will be presented to the 204-member Central Committee ? a cross-section of the nation's political elite ? on Nov. 1 before being discussed a week later at the congress, which is a largely ceremonial event, approving decisions made earlier by the party's inner circle.

In trying to use the Bo case to rally the rank-and-file, the Politburo said Friday that bringing down such a high-level leader was proof of the party's determination to tackle the corruption that has damaged public confidence.

"Investigations must be thorough, firm and make no appeasement, no matter who is involved and how powerful they are, so no corrupt member will escape the punishment of party discipline and the nation's law," it said.

RolePlayGateway?

I'm checking the interest on dark fantasy. Angels, demons, vampires, werewolves, necromancers, gifted humans, and such.

I have a majorly long backstory that I wouldn't want to bore you with at the present time, but for the sake of conveying information, here's a basic outline:

-'Angels' are more like deities because their soul purpose is to travel between galaxies creating life on planets that can sustain it.
-When the angels created humans, they were different from their other prior creations because they didn't respect the land and the other humans.
-The angels leave, thinking that this problem would sort itself out (because angels can't destroy their own creations), but then return after several centuries to try again. Too bad for them, the humans are still alive and have deconstructed their planet to reconstruct it how they see fit. They're also fighting wars among each other.
-The second time around, they've brought a younger angel with them who can't understand why her angel brethren would just leave behind the humans in their misery. There must be something we can do...
-The other angels don't hear the young one, and in turn, the angel 'loses her innocence' and her heart is corrupt with dark energy, so she crashes into earth after her wings splinter away and turn the color of charcoal, losing her ability to travel through space and becoming the first Fallen Angel that this universe has seen.

-Upon testing her ability to create life, the fallen angel creates a shadow demon by the name of Umbrok.
-Shadow demons are tall, dark (bluish-tinted) skinned, red-eyed, sharp-teethed creatures who can take the form of a shadow/smoke.
-After conversing together, they decide that Velyssa, the fallen angel is right for believing the way humans act is wrong and that they need a sole ruler over them to keep them in check.
-Umbrok begins to recruit humans who are close to death (at first, only humans who have been nearly murdered by their own kind, but it doesn't take long to branch out to the sick, etc.).
-Umbrok brings said humans back to the angel who corrupts their souls and turns them into vampires: immortal, blood-thirsty, darkness-thriving creatures.
-Vampires can blend in with humans except for their pale skin and fangs. If they have fed recently, and can resist their urge to kill, then they won't have a problem being around humans for a while. Isolation and not drinking human blood makes them weak, and their weakness makes them intolerant of the sun. The sun and fire will return them to their normal 'human weaknesses', making them destroy-able. Set a vampire on fire, and it won't survive for long.
-Yes, I said vampires can blend in with humans, however, the corrupt soul within them makes them 'controllable' by the fallen angel, not to the extent where said vampires will do her bidding, but they will lose all of their inhibitions when the fallen so chooses, causing them to have no problem killing even their closest friends or relatives.

-After this first 'controlling' happens (I'll continue on referring to it as the 'blood oath'), it sends out a beacon of dark energy into the galaxies (due to a miscalculation on power needed to control these vampires by Velyssa) alerting the angels of the evil afoot.
-The angels return to see vampires beginning to pick off the human race bit by bit without any means to fight back, so they believe that it is their duty to give them power against these creatures.
-The angels seek out those who are pure of heart and grant them an ability that would help them defend themselves.

-Umbrok reports the angels and their happenings to Velyssa who further commands Umbrok to bring her those who seek power, but the angels hadn't given it to them.
-When Velyssa receives these humans, she removes the 'death-force' within their soul (corrupting it and making them controllable via the blood oath), leaving behind only their life-force making them further ageless and able to control the dead. These corrupted humans are known as necromancers and they typically lose their minds with power and infatuation for the dead.
-Let it be noted that a 'death-force' taken from a human doesn't simply disappear. Velyssa renders it into a demon of death.
-When the blood oath takes them over, the necromancers use their powers and they and the reanimated dead go on a mindless killing spree.

-Death demons are tall, like shadow demons, but their skin is completely white. Their hair is transparent, like fishing wire. Their eyes have lone, ghostly pupils within them. They look as if their made of simply skin and bones (no muscle). Wherever they go, they can absorb the life from around them, turning it into their strength/muscle. They can only teleport in their weakest form.

-Before the angels hear about the necromancers and death demons, they plan to take their leave. They can't remain on one planet forever.
-However, they mean to give future humans a chance to protect themselves, so they visit certain elders in certain regions and grant them the power to give abilities to other humans.
-Once the angels leave, humans begin swarming the elders and they have to check each visitor for purity of heart before they can grant them any power.
-Another setback would be that the elders have only a basic idea of how to use these abilities, and upon first attempts, it is perceived that a human might not have received any power, however, on the night of the first following full moon, these humans who were the rare anomaly to not receive power transformed into wicked creatures who killed and pillaged everything in sight until morning.

---

Well, that introduces the basis of the story line. Except that there is another, (I believe) final type of demon referred to as 'The Wicked'. They look just like humans, though some are known to have horns or wings, and they also have strange eye color (purple, red, dark green, etc.). They have no special abilities beyond being extraordinarily charming and persuasive. They look harmless enough, but their job is to take advantage of a human's sinful nature and send them to the brink of their destruction, so a shadow demon or death demon can recruit them to the fallen angel. They can pose as the perfect best friend or lover and make you develop habits and addictions that can break a person down.

Anyway, that's my story. I'm sorry it's so long. If you have any questions, I'd love to answer them.

Voter registration problems widening in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? The Republican Party of Florida is filing an election fraud complaint against a vendor suspected of submitting questionable voter registration forms.

The move comes as counties across Florida are turning over to prosecutors registration forms the vendor collected for the state party.

Election officials in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties on Thursday handed over more than 100 suspect forms to local prosecutors. They did so days after officials in Palm Beach County also alerted prosecutors.

Republicans this week fired the vendor ? Strategic Allied Consulting ? it had hired to register voters in crucial swing states.

The Florida state party has paid the firm more than $1.3 million so far.

The national Republican Party also used the group for work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.

Appeals end for Britain's most famous extremist

LONDON (AP) ? He's reviled as the one-eyed, hook-handed terror suspect so troublesome that even Queen Elizabeth II reportedly felt moved to wonder why he remained at liberty despite his fiery call for a jihad, or holy war.

Britain is now set to extradite its most recognizable extremist ? Mustafa Kamal Mustafa, who is better known as Abu Hamza al-Masri ? to the United States, deporting him face terrorism charges, including allegedly helping set up a terrorist training camp in rural Oregon.

"This is a person who has been a blight on this country from more than a decade," said Robin Simcox, a research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, a London-based foreign-affairs think tank. "I don't think there will be many people shedding a tear."

It's been a long time coming: A European court decision Monday cleared the way for his extradition and that of four other terror suspects after an eight-year legal battle, He could be deported within weeks.

Britain's tabloid newspapers ran unflattering photos of the familiar, gray-bearded cleric and expressed cheerful satisfaction Tuesday that the preacher known for his anti-Western sermons might be sent away to face the consequences for his virulent sermons. The Sun tabloid headlined "Off: The Hook. Hate-filled Hamza can be deported to the United States." The Daily Express said, "Evil Hamza: At last we can kick him out."

For years, the Egyptian-born former nightclub bouncer, who claimed he lost his eye and hands fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, used his base in north London's Finsbury Park Mosque to persuade a young congregation to take up the cause of holy war. The mosque was once attended by both Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and "shoe bomber" Richard Reid. A senior UK terrorism official described the mosque as a "honeypot for extremists."

After the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the cleric declared that, "many people will be happy, jumping up and down at this moment."

When authorities raided the mosque, he simply moved outside, holding his sermons on the street, castigating Britain and calling for holy war.

The national frustration apparently rose to the head of state ? the monarch ? whose views are rarely given a public airing. Buckingham Palace refused to comment on a BBC report by security correspondent Frank Gardner, who said he had spoken with the queen and that she had mentioned that she told the senior government official in charge of law and order that she had been upset there was no way to arrest the preacher of hate.

"This is a conversation we had a little while ago and she did say that she had mentioned to ? I don't know which home secretary it was at the time ? that was there not some law he had broken?" Gardner told the Today program. "I wouldn't say she was necessarily lobbying, that's not for me to say, but like anybody she was upset that her country and her subjects had been denigrated by this man who was using this country as a platform for his very violent, hateful views."

Though the BBC apologized later for the breach of her confidence, the sentiment was clear.

The cleric and four others fought extradition, claiming the prospect of solitary confinement in one of America's "supermax" high-security jails and the potential for life without parole would breach a European ban on "torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." His lawyers had questioned U.S. assurances that he would not be mistreated or face the death penalty if convicted. Under European law, Britain cannot extradite suspects to countries where they might be executed.

But the case has often been cited by critics who point to flaws in the extradition system.

"It shows how a persistent litigant can spin these things out," said David Bentley, an expert on extradition and an associate fellow at Chatham House.

American officials allege that the cleric conspired to establish a training camp in Bly, Oregon, to give his followers combat and weapons training for violent jihad in Afghanistan. They also say he helped extremists who kidnapped 16 foreign tourists, including two Americans, in Yemen in 1998. Three British tourists and one Australian visitor were killed in a shootout between Yemeni security forces and the captors.

Britain first made legal moves to extradite the cleric to Yemen in 2003, but his lawyers appealed against the move. He was arrested on the U.S. warrant in 2004, but lost several British court cases in his fight against extradition before taking the case to the European court in 2008.

He is currently serving a seven-year prison term in Britain for separate charges of inciting hatred.

The other four suspects due to be extradited to the U.S. are Babar Ahmad, Syed Tahla Ahsan, Khaled al-Fawwaz and Adel Abdul Bary.

The cleric had appealed on the grounds that that too much time had passed since the alleged offenses to guarantee a fair trial; that some evidence could have been obtained by torture; and that he might be tortured or mistreated in the United States.

The European Court of Human Rights judges ruled that none of the material relied on by U.S. authorities "carries anything of the smell of the torture chamber sufficient to require its exclusion in a trial in this country."

Techniques For Mounting A Successful Mobile Marketing Campaign ...

Mobile marketing is one of the newest types of marketing, yet it actually incorporates elements of some of the oldest and well proven methods. Many of the same rules that apply to other kinds of marketing will apply to mobile marketing too. However, there are some noteworthy differences. This article presents some solid advice on getting the best from this brilliant advertising medium.

Your mobile platform should have a concrete home base. Your strategies with mobile marketing should focus on getting people to and keeping people in your home base. Do not develop your business solely on a mobile platform.

By closely monitoring your competitors, you can become more informed about the business environment. Find a way to differentiate yourself from you competitors.

TIP! Do not forget to invest some cash into making sure that your site is mobile-ready. Making an appealing and attractive mobile website can be difficult.

Use MMS messages to offer deals and promotions. This can attract new customers or reward your existing customers in some way. You can include promo codes with the coupons. Codes that can be tracked can easily be linked to your online product pages. The use of promotions like coupons help to retain loyal customers and attract new ones.

Add mobile friendly maps and correlating directions to your mobile website. Lot of people use their phones to help them navigate to their destinations. Make yourself accessible to them. Also look into how well your maps look on the various browsers used on mobile devices. Create a link to take users directly to Google Maps to get directions.

You should get as much data as you can about your target audience with mobile marketing. Your customer will be delighted to receive discounts on items that they really need or want.

TIP! You need to give some to get something back. Offer users incentives that will rationalize your mobile marketing efforts.

Work to please your customers. You should understand what your customers need and use that premise as your basic mobile marketing advertisement. Without knowing your customers? interests, you can?t effectively provide products they?ll buy. Therefore, when you first meet a customer, you should try to find out exactly what they are looking for.

Make sure your mobile campaign works on all the platforms that your customers most likely use. Your message must display properly on all three major smart-phone marketplaces: Android, Blackberry and iPhone. Remember, it?s easier to make one simple message to all your platforms rather than a custom-fit message to each one. Keeping it simple is what you should strive for in mobile marketing.

Try sending out reminders of your big events a couple of hours beforehand. This serves as a reminder to your customers that there is something special occurring that they might be interested in.

TIP! Make sure to place links on your site that are associated to social networking sites and are geared towards your business. It?s more probable that people will search from your site, than they will do the extra work to see if you have a Facebook or Twitter account.

    Mobile Marketing

Don?t squander your customers? limited attention. Do not use mobile marketing for the sake of it. Use mobile marketing as a useful tool to send out relevant messages. Make sure the information you give to customers and potential buyers is relevant. You will generate more sales by sending out useful content.

You can advertise a mobile marketing campaign as a good way for consumers to receive exclusive deals and offers. Refer to it in other advertisement, on social network communities and on your website. If you audience sees any benefit in your campaign, they will opt-in. Promote it as an entertaining way to stay informed about your special offers.

TIP! Have your friends or coworkers test the different elements of your campaign, such as emails or ads. Consider hiring someone to test out your system in order to get an unbiased viewpoint.

Attempting to go viral is always a good idea and can help your ad reach its maximum potential. The power of your mobile campaign is multiplied if your customers like your content enough to share it with their friends.

    Mobile Marketing

Think about what your goals are BEFORE you start planning your mobile marketing campaign. When starting off, figure out what your goals are and how you can apply them to mobile marketing. Are you using your existing customers to increase sales, or are you just trying to keep them around for future promotions?

TIP! Don?t forget about your existing customers when you go after new ones with your marketing tactics. New customers are less responsive to opening messages from you than ones that know you are reputable.

Start by building a good database. Don?t just add cell numbers to your marketing database via your mobile. However, you must first obtain permission from your mobile users. You can use a form from the internet or they can text you a code.

Cross-platform compatibility is essential in attracting more customers when taking on a mobile marketing campaign. You will lose customers if your campaign is not workable on multiple devices.

Remember, it is harder to navigate through your website using mobile equipment. Design a light website that loads quickly and can be navigated in a few clicks. You could have two versions of your site, one for computer users, and one for mobiles. However, a simple site works well for both types of users.

TIP! As a general rule, a product?s customer base is constant unless there is an industry-wide factor that causes a change. On the other hand, mobile customers are not as stable and access to them can be changed by elements that are external to your market.

Whenever you do mobile marketing calls to action, make sure to keep your messages brief and simple. Always consider that a mobile user might be short on time, and their devices are not conducive to completing long, drawn-out forms. Simplify your opt-in process to make it easier for your customers.

Mobile marketing messages should include a discount code or a promotional offer. Upon receiving special offers in a direct message, many potential clients will be willing to give up a little of their time to see what?s available.

A mission statement is important for you in mobile marketing. It spells out what your business does and how it plans to do it. Adhering to your principles will help you to keep on the straight and narrow.

TIP! If you make it easy to share your mobile marketing, your clients probably will. Before you start your campaign, make sure that your ads are easy to forward.

    Mobile Devices

To get the most from your mobile marketing campaign, it is important to be familiar with a wide variety of mobile devices. Sample many different types of mobile devices to give yourself the best possible idea of things that your customers experience.

Do not overdo your use of mobile marketing, or customers may get annoyed. If you are relatively inexperienced with mobile marketing, use these guidelines methodically to produce the desired results. By doing so, you are sure to attract additional clientele and generate new profits

TIP! Provide content that will be considered valuable by the sorts of customer you?re looking for. If you are sending messages out to customers, you should think about giving something away.

40% of Sub-Saharan Africa face digital divide over broadband access

Satellite communications has a crucial role to play in helping to bridge the digital divide which currently disenfranchises large parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, according to a new socio-economic report launched by the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO).

Satellite communications has a crucial role to play in helping to bridge the digital divide which currently disenfranchises large parts of Sub-Saharan Africa (image: file)

The report, which is sponsored by Avanti Communications, states that the vast majority of Sub-Saharan Africa is falling behind the rest of the world in terms of broadband connectivity because of limited supply and very high prices. The report also highlights that broadband should not just be viewed as a consequence of economic growth, but as a driver.? Research demonstrates that a 10% increase in broadband penetration yields economic growth of 1.38%, nearly twice the impact of the same increase in fixed line telephony.

However, the CTO concludes that despite the growth of fibre optic submarine cables and terrestrial networks, 40% of Sub-Saharan Africa will be unable to access broadband services unless there is greater use of satellites as a complementary technology.

African Information Communication Technologies Ministers set a target of 80% broadband penetration by 2020 at the ICT Indaba held in Cape Town in June 2012.? However, there will be significant challenges in achieving that goal.? Currently 341 million people live beyond the reach of fibre based broadband network and the CTO report highlights the essential role of satellite based broadband services in closing this gap.

In its report recommendations, the CTO urges African governments and institutions to adjust policies and regulations to more accurately recognise the role that satellites can play in delivering cost-effective broadband access and concomitant economic growth.

The CTO?s CEO, Professor Tim Unwin, said: ?The latest generation of Ka-band satellites will be able to provide a far more cost effective solution than the existing C-band and Ku-band.? This dispels the idea that satellite is just too expensive, but in fact provides a complementary technology to fibre and mobile in enabling broadband access across Africa.?

David Williams, Chief Executive of Avanti Communications, said:? ?We are delighted by the findings of the CTO report; it provides further evidence for the role of satellite broadband in reaching beyond the bounds of terrestrial and wireless networks. Avanti?s new Ka-band HYLAS 2 satellite will provide high-speed broadband to businesses, communities and government at lower price points than that of the current satellite services deployed in Africa.

?If the world is to keep pace with demand of technology ? particularly in emerging markets ? then satellites have a huge role to play. Governments across the world are seeing the wide scale potential and cost-effectiveness of using satellite for economic and social development as well as for other areas including defence and security. Satellites are bringing services to a range of diverse scenarios and locations.? The most exciting thing about our role in the industry is that our technology delivers a catalyst which can change the lives of millions of people.?

Jello wrestling highlights Rock & Tattoo Expo in Lewiston ? Living ...

LEWISTON, Maine ? The Jello-wrestling competition may have been a bit light on contestants, but it was definitely slimy on fun at this year?s Rock & Tattoo Expo.

In the end, there were no winners. There were, however, three friends cheered on by a crowd and covered from head to toe in orange Jello. Contestants shoved the slimy concoction at one another all the while trying to keep their balance in a plastic, blow-up baby pool.

?I guess we?ll just have to see what happens,? said Tina Handley, of Mexico, just minutes before getting in the ring with her friend Jennie Nisbet, of Rumford. ?The Jello?s pretty slippery, so I don?t expect to be standing much.?

The good-natured ? albeit gooey ? fun was all part of the three-day event held at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee featuring more than 40 tattoo artists from all across New England and as far away as California and Florida. Now in its third year, organizer Kris Howes ? tattoo artist and owner of INK! in Rumford ? said the event has nearly doubled each year.

In addition to tattoos and body piercings, the expo also featured a full slate of bands all day Saturday, as well as a freak show and art auction benefiting the family of Ken DeMars, of Carthage, who died suddenly at his home in July. Howes said this year?s event attracted about 1,000 people ? from the curious who came for their first tattoo or body piercing ? to those who wanted to add to their skin canvases.

?I think it?s become more accepted in the last five years,? said Howes? girlfriend, Michelle DuFault. ?It?s become more mainstreamed over the last few years.?

Nisbet said the Jello wrestling was a joke of DeMars who kept trying to talk organizers into having the event as part of the Expo. She said despite the low number of people who entered the event, the wrestling was fun and that was what the Tattoo Expo was all about.

April Pelletier, tattoo artist and co-owner of Artistic Creations in Auburn, said meeting tattoo artists from all over was one of the best parts of the event. This was her tattoo shop?s first time participating in the expo.

?Every artist here was phenomenal. The bands were amazing. And the people were just fantastic,? Pelletier said.

According to Pelletier, the event drew several new customers to the shop she owns with her husband and fellow tattoo artist, Eric, as well as many repeat customers to their business. Three new customers included sisters Joann Breen, of Skowhegan, and Michele and Beth Aldrich, both of Norridgewock, who came to the the Expo to all get the same tattoo.

Breen said all three got the word ?Sisters? permanently inked on their body with the infinity sign below it. While her sisters opted to have their tattoos placed on their feet, Breen got her tattoo on her wrist.

?We?re bonding. This is sister bonding,? said Breen with a laugh. ?I think if you get a tattoo, you should be proud of it. You shouldn?t get it just because.?

UK: Petition to end discriminatory Sharia court system

We, the undersigned, support the Arbitration and Mediation (Equality) Bill introduced to the House of Lords in 2011, which aims to tackle discriminatory practices, particularly against women and children, in arbitration and mediation carried out in the UK via Sharia courts. We call on the Government to take immediate action, support the passing of the Bill and defend equality for all before the law.

    Why this is important

The Arbitration and Mediation Services (Equality) Bill introduced into the House of Lords by Baroness Caroline Cox in 2011 aims to tackle the discrimination faced by Muslim women within the Sharia court system.

The Bill, which applies to all arbitration tribunals, will firmly outlaw the practice of giving women?s testimony half the weight of men?s.

    The Bill?s proposals include:

    • a new criminal offence of? ?falsely claiming legal jurisdiction?? for any person who adjudicates upon matters which ought to be decided by criminal or family courts.
    • Explicitly stating in legislation that sex discrimination law applies directly to arbitration tribunal proceedings. Discriminatory rulings may be struck down under the Bill.
    • Requiring public bodies to inform women that they have fewer legal rights if their marriage is unrecognised by English law.
    • Explicitly stating on the face of legislation that arbitration tribunals may not deal with matters of family law (such as legally recognised divorce or custody of children) or criminal law (such as domestic violence).
    • Making it easier for a civil court to set aside a consent order if a mediation settlement agreement or other agreement was reached under duress.
    • Explicitly stating on the face of legislation that a victim of domestic abuse is a witness to an offence and therefore should be expressly protected from witness intimidation.
