Business Insurance As A Factor Of The Risk Management Process ...

Santander Abbey had not complied with the statutory UK ?Code of Practice on Racial Policy in Employment? regarding Equal Opportunity Training. Mr Chagger had tried to resolve the issues surrounding his dismissal directly with Abbey Santander and Mr Hopkins, through the company?s grievance and appeals procedures. However, Santander Abbey had not provided any Equal Opportunity Training to any of the managers it had assigned to consider Mr Chagger?s issues; the Tribunal found that there existed at Santander Abbey a culture of tending to deny and refuse Mr Chagger?s issues, and his issues were simply dismissed out of hand by each and every manager who had been assigned to decide on them.

In an evolving organisation, nothing stands still. An effective risk assessment policy includes the capacity for re-evaluation and improvement. At a practical level, this will require the nomination of an individual or a group of individuals to the responsibility of ensuring that risk management policies and procedures are up-to-date, as well as the establishment of regular review cycles of the organisations risk management approach.

Risk management is essential to success in business. Most of us are very well equipped to manage risk and change effectively. Our everyday activities prepare us well. You can find numerous parallels in everyday life.

You don?t need consultants from top tier enterprise firms to get started with process management. As a former KPMG manager, Hewlett Packard consultant and advisor the Australian Department of Defence I can show you how to identify a single point dependency and create effective business process. The conclusion that there are various accreditations for example PRINCE2 Practitioner which have come to be required for project management career development and that you will find other ones which will help identify an individuals skill sets is not unpredictable.

Money management: in order to preserve your money and to see another trading day you need to have good money management capabilities i.e. you need to know and calculate the risk and potential gains of every trade before you enter the market. Good money management gives you the edge and advantage to control your trades. As you must have known every professional trader make loses once in a while in the currency market only they make few loses and more gains. So in other words always make use of stop losses and profit target like the experts do.

risk management

The monitoring of the external environment for risk management should be as diligent as the internal monitoring, because many of the internal risks are a direct result of exposure to external risks, many of which can be avoided, he said.

Information management is an area requiring people with the right skills in risk management vacancies. The value of information can be looked at in two ways. There is the intrinsic value, which covers the costs associated with acquiring data, systems for storage, structuring and maintaining information, and delivering it via IT systems.

A closer look at the consuming gaze

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Rows of chip bags in a vending machine, endless bottles of shampoo on pharmacy shelves, long lines of books arranged in the bestsellers section at the bookstore. From supermarket shelves to barroom beer selection, long lines of horizontally arranged products are the norm when it comes to the shopping experience.

But how does where a product is placed on the storeroom shelf influence which option a consumer will ultimately choose? It turns out that the shopper's eye has a very central focus.

"Consumers are more likely to purchase products placed in the middle of a display -- without even being aware of it," says Onur Bodur. The associate professor from Concordia's John Molson School of Business co-authored a study forthcoming in the Journal of Consumer Research with marketing researchers at HEC in France and the Aston Business School in England.

Using eye-tracking devices, Bodur and his colleagues investigated how location influences choices for products as varied as vitamins, meal replacement bars and energy drinks.

They found that consumers would increase their visual focus on the central option in a product display area in the final five seconds of the decision-making process -- and that was the point at which they determined which option to choose.

It turns out that the process is a subconscious one. When asked how they had come to decide on what product to buy, consumers did not accurately recall their choice process. What's more, they were not aware of any conscious visual focus on one area of the display over another.

What does uncovering these unconscious habits mean this mean for the average shopper? Greater awareness of buying behaviours should lead to more informed choices. Says Bodur, "by using this newfound knowledge that visual attention is naturally drawn to the center of a display, consumers can consciously train themselves to make a more thorough visual scan of what's on offer."

When it comes to shopping, the visual equivalent to thinking outside of the box just might lead to savvier selections.

Woman gets 12 years in prison for 1987 N.Y. baby kidnapping

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A woman who abducted a newborn baby from a New York City hospital more than 20 years ago and raised the child as her own was sentenced on Monday to 12 years in prison.

Ann Pettway, 50, pleaded guilty in February to the 1987 kidnapping of Carlina White, then 19 days old, from Harlem Hospital, where her parents brought her to be treated for a fever. White, now 25, was reunited with her family in 2011.

At Pettway's sentencing in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Monday, White's parents, now estranged, told a packed courtroom that she had robbed them of the joy of raising their child and ruined their lives.

"You hurt me so bad," White's 47-year-old father, Carl Tyson, told Pettway as he addressed U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel.

"Our lives will never be the same," sobbed mother Joy White, who was 16 when her baby disappeared.

Pettway, wearing a dark blue prison jumpsuit, begged forgiveness. Carlina White was not in the courtroom.

"I would like to apologize to the family," said Pettway, her voice choked with tears. "I am deeply sorry for what I've done... but I'm here today to right my wrong."

Judge Castel sentenced Pettway 12 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

Castel said Pettway had "inflicted a parent's worst nightmare on a young couple who was only concerned about the health of their baby."

Carlina White's absence is one of the longest non-parental abductions in which a missing child was reunited with family, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

The sentence was part of a plea agreement for Pettway who, her lawyers argued, had a troubled childhood, suffered depression and had trouble bearing her own children. She originally faced a maximum sentence of life in prison.

According to court documents, Pettway had taken a train from her home in Connecticut to the hospital, where she saw Carlina White. Pettway, disguised as a nurse, grabbed the baby and took her to Connecticut, where she raised the girl about 45 miles east of her parents' home.

White, who was raised as Nejdra Nance, at 16 grew suspicious because Pettway was unable to produce her birth certificate or Social Security number. In 2011, White tracked down her biological parents in New York through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

DNA tests confirmed White was the parents' missing child. Soon afterward, Pettway turned herself in to authorities.

Tyson, a truck driver, said his daughter is living in Atlanta with a 7-year-old daughter.

Get Patriotic With a DIY Union Jack Manicure

With the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics being held in London this year, it's not surprising plenty of us Brits are coming over all patriotic. If you want to wear your red, white and blue pride on your nails, you're in luck! Max Factor celebrity nail artist, Zarra Celik has created Cool Britannia looks and her favourite, just like mine, is the Union Jack flag. You can nail this look at home by following Zara's tips below. Steady hands at the ready:

  • 1. Using a thin nail brush, paint a red stripe down the middle of the nail using a shade like Max Colour Effect Mini Ruby Tuesday (?3.99). Wait for it to dry, then paint two diagonal stripes in opposite directions to form an X.
  • 2. Paint triangles in a bold blue shade like Max Colour Effect Mini Odyssey Blue (?3.99) between the red stripes.
  • 3. Outline the edges of the stripes and in between the triangles with a white nail striper.
  • 4. Finish with a top coat like Max Factor's Nailfinity (?5.99) over the whole nail.

Let me know how you get on!

Brain response to emotion altered in BD youth | Mental Health Hub

By Mark Cowen

Results from a US study show that adolescents with bipolar disorder (BD) have altered activation in certain brain regions in response to facial expressions of emotion.

Furthermore, the researchers found that adolescents with the mood disorder exhibited problems processing and/or disengaging attention from facial expressions of emotion compared with their mentally healthy peers.

The findings come from a study of 20 euthymic adolescents with BD who were aged 9-17 years and had a family history of the mood disorder and 21 mentally healthy adolescents without such a family history. There were no significant between-group differences regarding mean age, gender distribution, or IQ.

All of the participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain while viewing happy, sad, or neutral facial expressions.

Overall, there were no significant differences between adolescents with BD and controls regarding task performance, although BD patients showed a trend for reduced accuracy when identifying the gender of the happy and sad faces.

However, adolescents with BD exhibited significantly reduced activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and significantly increased amygdala/hippocampal activation while viewing facial expressions of emotion compared with controls.

Furthermore, adolescents with BD showed increasing levels of activation in the superior temporal sulcus/insula and visual cortex between the early and late phases of exposure to each block of facial expressions.

By contrast, activation in these areas fell slightly among controls between the early and late phases of exposure.

This suggests that mentally healthy individuals efficiently process emotional faces and then decrease allocation of neural resources, whereas BD patients have a gradually increasing response to faces, ?possibly reflecting difficulty processing emotional facial expressions,? comment Amy Garrett (Stanford University School of Medicine, California) and team.

They conclude in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: ?Our findings support models of deficient prefrontal and excessive amygdala activation in patients with BD compared with healthy controls, and add new information suggesting that youth with BD have aberrant timing of superior temporal sulcus and visual cortical activation to facial expressions.?

Find Out What You May Be Missing About Marketing

Set up profiles on all social media sites to strengthen the levels of communication that you have with your internet marketing audience. Of course, setting them up is just step one. The key is to be active on sites, like Facebook and Twitter, to show your audience your true value.

Add an email newsletter to your Internet marketing strategy. Keep in touch with your customers regularly by sending them a periodic newsletter with updates and interesting information. This helps you maintain a relationship with the customers you have worked so hard to cultivate. It also provides them a way to contact you to offer valuable feedback.

If another website or business has said something good about your company, provide a link to that information in your advertisement. This will show potential customers that you are legitimate and help get them excited about what you have available. It is always better to allow someone else to sing your praises.

When offering free items as a form of internet marketing, you are not limited to only physical items, giveaways and coupons. Try offering a free trial or free service. Techniques such as a free download for software products, free e-books, or free access to premium areas of your site can go a long way.

Give your customers free shipping. Free shipping gives you a huge pull on any market, because shipping costs can sometimes double the actual cost of an item. If this method is not financially feasible for your business, consider offering free shipping to customers who purchase a specific dollar or item amount.

Be sure to keep an eye on your keyword density and adjust it as needed. On any given page, keywords and phrases should make up about 3-5 percent of the text and links. Don?t focus solely on your home page, either. Make sure every page on your site includes some keywords.

Become part of the online communities in your industry by posting regularly on message boards. If you make yourself useful by answering questions and posting relevant information, you can build trust with others. Your signature should include your web address. People you help may end up poking around your website for more expert information and end up purchasing products. Better yet, it?s an excellent way to keep up on news in your field.

If you have a local business, one of the ways you can boost your internet marketing efforts is by adding your site to local directories. There are a number of directories centered around helping visitors find local businesses. By sumitting your site to each of these directories, not only are you getting a top quality backlink, but you are also increasing your chances of reaching local customers in need of your services.

A small, personal business online often receives requests for trades. For example: A customer may contact you saying that he or she can perform certain tasks for you in exchange for your product. While these deals might sound enticing, you should respectfully decline any such offers. Stick with accepting cash and not favors.

Offer something of value to get people to sign up for your email lists. If you run a blog about dog training, you can offer readers, your top 20 tips for puppy training, when they give you their email address. If you can build an email list, then you have more chances to send them product offers that they will want.

In order to be successful in internet marketing you need to be able to supply your customers with what they want. Be sure to read the sales letters that they send. Some of these letters might contain negative feedback about your website. The right approach is to take the criticism in a constructive way.

Make sure you distribute your articles to many online directories. The more directories you submit your articles to, the more traffic you will have. The result of having more traffic is having more sales, or at least getting more leads. Don?t focus too much on putting duplicate articles out there, they will still get traffic and generate sales.

You now have a lot more information to use for the strategies that you want to implement with your internet marketing endeavors. Just be sure to remember that, not everything works for everybody and you must formulate your own unique strategy for success. So, go over what you learned and see what works for you. It won?t be long before success should follow.

I presume this has been useful for info on wordpress web designer, and certainly you can find out on the blog itself at http://www.supervas.com/the-virtual-assistant-and-its-role-in-the-internet-marketing-world, why not visit now and check them out.

Missing Arkansas girl found alive in Tennessee

A 12-year-old Arkansas girl who was abducted by her adoptive brother after he allegedly killed their parents has been rescued unharmed, Memphis police said today.

The Amber Alter for her safe return has been canceled.

Her adoptive brother, Antonio Whitlow, 33, is in police custody on two counts of capital murder charges, police said. His parents, Annette and Bobby Whitlow, both 65, were found dead in their Little Rock home Saturday afternoon, when Amber and Antonio disappeared.

The Little Rock police report says that Grady Carter found Annette Whitlow dead in the living room when he arrived at the couple's home for a meeting. Police later found Bobby Whitlow dead in the kitchen.

Although police are not commenting on how the couple died, the report indicates that a knife or other cutting instrument was involved in the crime.

An Amber Alert was issued for the girl and police said that they feared her life was in danger.

Memphis police found Antonio and Amber at 10 p.m. Saturday near Red Birds Stadium, police spokeswoman Alyssa Moore told ABCNews.com. They arrested Antonio on a, outstanding warrant for aggravated assault.

Antonio Whitlow and Amber are back in Arkansas today, according to a Little Rock police spokeswoman Cassandra Davis. Antonio was extradited on murder charges, and Amber is with the state Department of Human Services until relatives can get custody of her.

Davis said she didn't know whether those relatives are part of Amber's adoptive family or her biological family.

According to Bobby Whitlow's Twitter account, he was a Vietnam War Veteran who oversaw the Warriors of Christ ministry. He referred to his wife, Annette, as a "prophetess" and often tweeted religious proverbs to his nine followers.

His last tweet was, "The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. Proverbs 29:15."

The double homicide and abduction shook the Whitlow's Little Rock neighborhood.

"His daughter was the same age as my grandson and they would always come down, my grandson would always come down and play with them," Edgar Miller, a family friend, told KATV, ABC's affiliate in Arkansas.

He said the neighborhood will miss the deceased couple.

"It's a hurting thing," said Miller. "We're going to suffer a great loss."

Semi-finalists decided on the final day of ASP 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco

Hawaii?s Tanner Hendrickson, America?s Michael Powell, Costa Rica?s Carlos Munoz and Australia?s Leigh Sedley made it into the semi-finals at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco after emerging triumphant in their respective quarter-final heats that went down at Playa Revolcadero in Acapulco, Mexico, on Sunday, July 22.

The surfing conditions at the primary event site continued to remain challenging, bringing in six-foot waves that were quite hard to control. The search for big scores turned out to be real tough for the up-and-coming surfers as they battled it out for survival.

The first Quarter-final pitted Hendrickson against his fellow countryperson Gavin Gillette. Both the surfers had done quite well to stay alive in contention for the event title over the last few days despite continuously facing demanding surfing conditions.

However, Hendrickson brought the solid run of his rival to a halt as he finished with a heat-total of 9.07 points against his rival?s 8.15 points.

The second Quarter-final saw Powell square off with his compatriot Colin Moran in a battle for the semi-final spot. Both the surfers struggled to find their rhythm during the course of the battle, a task that proved real tough as the conditions pushed them to the limits.

Powell eventually managed to reach a heat-total of 7.46 points, whereas Moran ended the heat with a two-wave total of 3.87 points. The lacklustre performance by the latter led to his elimination from the competition while sending Powell into the next stage of the competition.

The third Quarter-final saw Munoz and America?s Michael Dunphy take each other on in a man-on-man battle for a place in the semi-final. While the two surfers had done well to remain alive in the contention for the event title, only one of them could advance further in the competition.

As the battle got underway, the Costa Rican surfer managed to get his hands on a couple of decent scores and reached a heat-total of 12.10 points, which kept him ahead of his rival Dunphy, who finished with a? heat-total of 10.23 points, until the end to see him through to victory.

The battle for the last remaining spot in the semi-finals took place between Sedley and Peru?s Miguel Tudela.

As the fourth Quarter-final got underway, both the surfers put on an energetic and determined performance to try and get their hands on the win. As the dust settled, it was Sedley who stood victorious with a heat-total of 13.33 points against his rival?s two-wave total of 11.14 points.

(AP) ? Asian stocks charged higher Friday after the European Central Bank chief vowed to save the euro currency union from the continent's debt crisis and Samsung Electronics reported another record quarterly profit.

Markets have been rattled this week by fears that Spain, the fourth-largest economy among the 17 that use the euro, could need a bailout along the lines of Greece, Ireland and Portugal because its borrowing rates are high. That would strain Europe's finances and potentially cause the breakup of the euro.

But sentiment turned brighter after the ECB's chief Mario Draghi pledged that would not happen, asserting Thursday that "the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro." That could involve buying government bonds to lower the borrowing rates of financially stumbling countries such Spain and Italy. European stocks surged. France's CAC 40 jumped 4.1 percent and Spain's IBEX 35 vaulted 6.1 percent.

IG Markets strategist Stan Shamu said hopes for ECB action will remain elevated ahead of its scheduled Aug. 2 meeting.

"With renewed hopes that the ECB will take further action to address the crisis, regional markets are facing the prospect of a positive finish to the week," he said in an emailed commentary.

Asian markets also got a boost after Samsung reported another record-high quarterly profit as customers flocked to Galaxy smartphones, helping it outdo rivals even at a challenging time for the global tech industry. Samsung Electronics rose 3.2 percent in Seoul.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average was up 1.1 percent at 8,534.81 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 1.8 percent to 19,234.36. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 1.2 percent to 4,196.30. South Korea's Kospi climbed 2.3 percent to 1,823.01 while the Shanghai Composite shed 0.2 percent to 2,122.61.

Wall Street was also boosted by Draghi's comments despite disappointing earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average on Thursday jumped 212 points, or 1.7 percent, to 12,888. The broader the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for the first time in five days. It was up 22.13 points, or 1.7 percent, to 1,360.02. The Nasdaq composite index rose 39.01 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,893.25.

In energy markets, benchmark crude was up 31 cents at $89.70 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract crude rose 42 cents to finish at $89.39 in New York on Thursday.

The euro was up 0.1 percent at $1.2290. The dollar fell 0.1 percent to 78.23 yen.

BookKeeping Express 'Balances' Fairfield County's Businesses ...

?Local Entrepreneur Opens BookKeeping Express Office; Provides Fairfield County's Businesses Professional Bookkeeping Services?

NORTHBROOK, IL, July 26, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- BookKeeping Express, the first U.S. franchise focused solely on bookkeeping services, recently announced the opening of its first office in Fairfield serving businesses throughout Fairfield, Southport and Westport.

BookKeeping Express offers a much-needed service to businesses, so they can get back to doing what they do best.

"Our 'Profit and Growth' services help alleviate a void that exists locally within the business community," said Richard Landino, owner of BookKeeping Express in Fairfield. "I am excited about serving Fairfield, Southport and Westport and setting my roots deep in the business community. BookKeeping Express has more than 20 years of experience in the industry, and its proven business model will provide me with the marketing and operations support needed to help grow the business, thus allowing me to help my clients grow theirs."

An experienced certified public accountant, Landino joins BookKeeping Express after a 30-year career in public accounting. Looking for ways to launch his own business and stay involved in the accounting industry, Landino began exploring franchise concepts. When he came across BookKeeping Express, he knew it would be a perfect platform to implement his expertise and turn his dream of owning a business into a reality. In addition to his entrepreneurial journey, Landino is happily married with two children. The family is actively involved in various community organizations. In fact, Richard and his wife Anne are Deacons of the First Congregational Church of Derby and Richard is also the Finance Director of the church. Additionally, as residents of Trumbull, Landino's youngest son most recently attended Jane Ryan Elementary School, where Landino was a member of the Jane Ryan Fathers Club.

"So many otherwise sound businesses fail to account for their financial dealings, which in turn hinders their revenues and growth. They want to efficiently move forward, but without knowing how to best utilize their financial data, they often feel frustrated and overwhelmed...and that's where we come in," added Landino. "The benefits of allowing BookKeeping Express to maintain their books with CPA oversight throughout the year are enormous from a cost standpoint...particularly in the current economic climate. Without this kind of partnership expertise, I see too many business owners experiencing the negative impact of falling behind on their financial records."

BookKeeping Express' services include setting up charts of accounts and general ledgers, monthly data entry, processing and managing accounts payable and accounts receivable, producing monthly reports, tax reporting and business consulting. Plus, BookKeeping Express utilizes a Custom Flex Pricing Model that is based on the clients' needs instead of a one-size-fits-all, hourly billing approach.

Administration projects $1.2T 2012 budget deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? New figures released Friday by the White House predict this year's federal budget deficit will end up at $1.2 trillion.

That would make the fourth consecutive year of trillion dollar-plus deficits during President Barack Obama's administration.

The bleak figures, while expected, are sure to add fuel to the already heated presidential campaign, in which Obama's handling of the economy and the budget are a main topic. Friday's release came as the government announced that U.S. economic growth slowed to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent in the second quarter of this year, as consumers cut back sharply on spending.

The White House budget office also predicts for this year that the economy will grow at a modest 2.6 percent annual rate and that the jobless rate will average 8 percent.

"The economic recovery that began in 2009 will continue at a moderate rate and unemployment will gradually decline," Jeffrey Zients, the acting White House budget director said in a blog post. "The economy still faces significant headwinds," he added.

The 2012 budget year ends on Sept. 30. The White House also predicted that next year's deficit will fall just short of $1 trillion, higher than it predicted in its February budget release. The predicted deficit for 2012 actually improved by $116 billion, but much of that was because Congress didn't enact much of Obama's jobs plan.

But the White House promises deficits will drop to about 3 percent of the size of the economy by 2017, in part through $1.5 trillion in tax increases over the coming decade.

The White House report ? released Friday afternoon with the Olympics poised to distract voters for two weeks ? again trumpets Obama's longstanding approach to tackling the deficit. It includes tax increases on families earning above $250,000, already-enacted "caps" on agency operating budgets and modest savings from federal benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

"Since taking office, the president has worked to restore fiscal responsibility," says the OMB report.

Under Obama's budget plan, the total U.S. debt would reach $16.2 trillion by the end of the year and soar to $25.4 trillion at the end of a decade's time.

The government is likely to reach its borrowing cap ? the subject of a fierce fight last summer between Obama and Republicans ? late this year or early next year, which is going to require the next Congress and either Romney or Obama to act together to increase the borrowing cap. That is seen by many as an opportunity to force lawmakers to finally tackle the country's major budget problems.

Romney, for his part, offers relatively few specifics on the budget but promises to bring total government spending down to 20 percent of the U.S. economy by the end of a first term in 2016. That is roughly in line with where it was during Republican George W. Bush's presidency. Government spending now equals 24 percent of gross domestic product.

Chris Easter: 7 Things Men Want From Wedding Night Sex

Believe it or not, many newlyweds don't seal the deal on the wedding night. This isn't due to a lazy libido, but rather exhaustion after a full day of smiling for photos, glad-handing your guests and chicken dancing your rear off. The temptation to crash after the reception is going to be strong, especially if you've already had sex with your partner prior to the wedding. However, I urge you to pull it together and focus on the amazing possibilities that wedding night sex has to offer. You've got the honeymoon and the rest of your lives to catch up on rest. You (hopefully) only get one crack at the wedding night. So make it count.

I recently read Charli Penn's post on what women really want from wedding night sex. To provide the other half of the picture, here's my list of what men want from the wedding night. Brides, take note...

Cutting Right to the Action
Forget the after party trend. Your friends and family will do just fine keeping the party going on their own. He wants to be alone with you, starting with the ride back to the hotel.

That Look in Your Eyes
If he's on his A-game, he's going to set the mood with champagne, rose petals and some sexy music. His goal: seeing that look in your eyes that tells him you can't resist him. Don't worry, it'll come naturally.

Lingerie
The only thing men love more than lingerie is watching a woman take off lingerie. And the more exotic, the better. Whether it's something you were given as a bridal shower gift or something new you picked up just for the occasion, surprise him with a show.

Accessories
Don't stop at lingerie. Contrary to what you may have heard elsewhere, guys do pay attention to your heels, jewelry and nail polish. We love how you look wearing these accessories... and only these accessories.

Foreplay
Don't assume he wants to jump right into the action. The perfect way to rev up his engine is to tease him, talk dirty to him and push him to the point of no return.

Surprises
If you've already been having sex, he might feel that he's seen all of your tricks. Surprise him with a "what was that?" moment to let him know the rest of your lives in the bedroom are going to be even more exciting than he could imagine. Bonus: You'll likely inspire him to try some new moves of his own.

A Moment to Take it All In
After the ride (or rides) are over, take a moment to reflect on the day with him. This is the beginning of the rest of your lives. Tell him how special the day was and have one last toast to the start of something beautiful.

Stacy Lewis takes lead with 63 at Evian Masters

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) ? Stacy Lewis of the United States made seven consecutive birdies and tied the Evian Masters record with a 9-under 63 in the opening round on Thursday.

Her birdie flurry from holes 5-11, plus two more on 17 and 18, helped Lewis to a two-shot lead over Hee Young Park of South Korea.

"I didn't really have anything going the first few holes. I don't know what changed or clicked," Lewis said. "It was just one of those days where you get into this rhythm. I was more happy to finish with the two birdies than even the seven, just to get some momentum going into tomorrow."

Lewis, a two-time winner this year, matched three-time champion Helen Alfredsson's round of 63, set by the Swede in 2008.

"I know I've made six (birdies) in a row before, but I don't know if I've made seven ... I almost made eight," Lewis said. "I definitely think this is one of the lowest rounds I've ever shot."

It marked Lewis' career-low round. Her previous low was 64, which she shot in the second and fourth rounds of the LPGA Classic in June.

Park, who used a belly putter for the first time, made five straight birdies on the front nine.

South Korea's Ilhee Lee finished three shots behind Lewis. Colombia's Mariajo Uribe and Japan's Mika Miyazato are four behind after 67s. American Paula Creamer shot a 68.

Defending champion Ai Miyazato, who also won in 2009, had three bogeys on the back and finished with a birdie for a 71. She was joined by Inkster and Cheyenne Woods, Tigers Woods' niece, who trailed the leader by eight shots.

Michelle Wie, who tied for second place in Evian six years ago, finished at 73. Top-ranked Yani Tseng had a 76, compounded by a wild shot into the rough on the 18th.

Park, who failed to make the cut at the U.S. Women's Open three weeks ago, had a bogey on the fourth hole before her run of birdies. She added three more on the back nine. After shooting 6 under in the pro-am tournament on Wednesday, she sensed the belly putter would work for her.

"I have been playing 15 years, and I have never used the belly putter before," said Park, who won her only LPGA Tour title at last year's season-ending Titleholders. "Then, like 10 days ago, I just changed (to) the belly putter.

"My people around me (were) saying 'Did you know that Ernie Els won (the British Open) last week with the belly putter? Did you see that?' Then I got more confidence."

Wie struggled with her putting.

"I felt like I played a lot better than my score," Wie said. "I hit it good, but it didn't go in, that was a bit frustrating and affected my momentum.

Tseng's shot on No. 18 landed deep in the rough at an awkward angle, just above the water. The five-time major winner saved par, but finished with five bogeys and one birdie.

Lewis, who finished 46th at the U.S. Women's Open three weeks ago, trained hard for the Evian Masters.

"Every year I've learned the greens here better and better," she said. "I feel really good about my game. I just went back and worked hard these last couple of weeks, just mentally getting in a better place."

Rat muscle + rubbery film = world's first artificial jellyfish (+video)

Researchers say they've created a jellyfish that's one part artificial, one part biological. Creation of the 'pseudo organism' could yield new insights into medical research ? or even cleaning up environmental pollution.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff Writer / July 23, 2012

Moon jellyfish are shown in this file photo off the shores of Pompano Beach, Fla. Scientists say the creation of the world's first artificial jellyfish could open new doors for medical and environmental research.

Scientists have created the first artificial jellyfish -- a tiny blend of muscle tissue from a rat and thin, rubbery material from Dow Chemical Corporation ? but with nary a jellyfish gene to its name.

The approaches used to build this "pseudo organism," as the researchers call it, may pave the way for more-effective ways to test new medicines, as well as new ways to repair or replace damaged organs in ways that use a patient's own tissue types ? and no batteries for power, the team suggests.

Beyond the therapeutic lie other potential applications. The researchers say over the long term, their work could help lead to roving, autonomous sentinels that can measure pollution plumes in the ocean and perhaps even clean up the mess ? while drawing nutrients from the ocean itself.

But the development also highlights the blurring line between life as it has evolved on Earth over the past 3.7 billion years and artificial forms that are beginning to emerge from labs, notes Kevin Parker, a physicist at Harvard University's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, in Cambridge, Mass.

Initially, biologists identified organisms and their relationships to other organisms by their shapes and the functions various part of an organism performed. More recently, researchers have used genetics to define those relationships.

Here, looks alone suggest "this thing is a jellyfish, and functionally it's a jellyfish," Dr. Parker says. Yet the faux fish's biological material comes from a rat, so genetically, it's a rat."

"Everyone would agree that this is not an organism, although it's alive," he says. In effect, it's a tiny robot whose movements are controlled by living cells.

Some researchers have tried to mimic nature from the ground up, putting novel forms of DNA into DNA-free cells and activating the cells.

In this case, the research team ? led by Dr. Parker and CalTech bioengineer John Dabiri ? reverse-engineered a jellyfish's means of moving in the water. They then put the artificial and biological pieces together in the lab to produce a biomachine with the same shape and motions as its natural counterpart.

The results were published Monday in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

For years, Parker had been researching ways to use biological engineering to provide better ways to help patients diagnosed with heart disease, he says. On various visits to the New England Aquarium in Boston, he was struck by how similar the symmetrical undulations of a moving jellyfish was to the motions of a beating heart, he recalls.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dabiri gave a talk at Harvard on jellyfish propulsion.

Dabiri "was walking down the hall, and I pulled him over and said: 'Hey, man, I think I can build a jellyfish,' " Parker recalls. "He looked at me like I was off my rocker."

But not too far off, apparently, because a collaboration was born.

Brittany Wenger, 17, Wins Google Science Fair Grand Prize For ...

Have you ever helped the hard-of-hearing listen to music? Or built a computer program to diagnose breast cancer? These kids have.

The five teenage winners of the second annual Google Science Fair were announced on Monday, according to Scientific American. Each of these brainy teens were chosen from among 30 finalists from around the world and were treated (along with the runners-up) to a gala held in an airplane hanger near the company's Palo Alto headquarters in California. (This is Google, after all.)

But the winners, of course, were awarded the best swag: Prizes included a college scholarships from Google for $25,000 or $50,000, trips to scientific hotspots like CERN and Fermilab, and (perhaps best of all), trophies made out of Lego bricks.

What did these brainiacs do to win the admiration of one of the best tech companies in the world? Read about each of they're projects below.

BRITTANY WENGER FROM FLORIDA:

gsf83

The Grand Prize winner of the science fair, for good reason, was a 17-year-old from Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Combining the fields of biology and computer science, Wenger wrote an app that helps doctors diagnose breast cancer, according to the description of her project on Google.

The type of computer program, called a "neural network," was designed by Wenger to mimic the human brain: Give it a massive amount of information (in this case, 7.6 million trials), and the artificial "brain" will learn to detect complex patterns and make diagnostic calls on breast cancer. Her program used data from "fine needle aspirates," a minimally invasive procedure that, unfortunately, is often one of the least precise diagnosis processes, according to Fox News. But Wenger is helping change that, as her program correctly identifies 99 percent of malignant tumors.

?I think it might be hospital ready," she told WWSB. "I'd love to get different data from doctors. Right now, I have 700 test samples.?

Visit her app at Cloud4Cancer Breast Cancer Detection (here) to see how it works.

JONAH KOHN FROM CALIFORNIA:

gsf63

For this eight grader from San Diegan, who won the 13- to 14-year-old category, it all started with a bite on his guitar. "Last year, when I wanted to play guitar with one of my friends, I realized it was much too loud in the classroom to hear the guitar," Kohn said in a YouTube video. "But if you put your teeth on the top of the guitar, then you can hear it no matter how loud it is around you."

Kohn saw implications for the hearing-impaired. For his science-fair project, he wanted to show that the experience of music could be improved for the hard-of-hearing through tactile sound.

Filtering songs down to different frequency ranges and applying those vibrations to different parts of the body (such as fingertips), Kohn showed that the listening experience of people with cochlear implants could be improved by 95 percent, based on tests of 12 individuals with hearing loss.

"I thought it was a very inspiring idea," Kohn told KPBS. "I thought it could help a massive amount of people."

IVAN HERVIAS RODRIGUEZ, MARCOS OCHOA, SERGIO PASCUAL FROM SPAIN:

gsf45

For the winning project in the 15- to 16-year-old category, this trio of young scientists form Logro?o, Spain documented the microbes and other nasty things living in the fresh water on northeaster Spain.

Collecting hundreds of samples over more than three years, according to their project description, they documented the presence of microbes found in over 60 fresh water sites, establishing fresh water quality for the entire valley of the Ebro River, mapped out below. (Watch them describe their project in Spanish in a YouTube video here.)

"They went back to a very ancient tradition in natural sciences, which is sampling the real world, cataloguing what you find, and then analyzing it to try to interpret what the implications are,? Vint Cerf, Google's chief Internet evangelist, told Scientific American of their project.

Foreclosed homes: Now, they're hot properties

Growing buyer interest is clearing out more than 1.5 million foreclosed homes, clearing out a huge backlog. Interest in foreclosed homes is highest in states hit hardest by housing crisis.

By Meredith Bennett-Smith,?Correspondent / July 23, 2012

n this file photo, a foreclosed house with sale pending sign is shown in Tigard, Ore. Foreclosed homes have lost their stigma and are, instead, sought-after properties because of the discounts they come with.

Don Ryan/AP/File

Earlier this month, David Welch, a veteran RE/MAX real estate agent, took a young couple to tour a house in the Orlando, Fla., area. The prospective homeowners liked the house and put down an offer, in cash, for nearly $8,000 over the asking price. "That would be an attractive offer for anybody," Mr. Welch recalls.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But the couple did not get the home. By the time they put in their offer, 17 others were already on the table. The big draw? The house was a "distressed property" ? a euphemism for being in foreclosure, or repossessed by a mortgage lender.

Once considered damaged goods fit for only the bravest investors, foreclosures have not only lost their stigma, they've become hot properties. Middle-class families are chasing after them because, since the bursting of the housing bubble, foreclosed homes are popping up in desirable neighborhoods and typically sell at a big discount. This growing interest in distressed homes is helping to clear out a backlog of the more than 1.5 million homes in the foreclosure process and remove a huge drag on the real estate market.

Foreclosures are "still weighing down the market, but in my view it's better that the market absorb those foreclosures now rather than continue the pattern we've seen in the past of pushing the problem down the road," says Daren Blomquist, director of marketing communications at RealtyTrac, a foreclosure information website based in Irvine, Calif. "Buyers are interested and willing to buy them."

The turnaround in attitudes is dramatic. In a 2009 survey, only one-quarter of home buyers said they would consider buying a foreclosed property, according to the National Association of Realtors. Today, it's more than two-thirds. And it's not just investors looking to pick up cheap rental properties. In the same NAR survey, released May 30, 92 percent of potential home buyers said they would be interested in buying a foreclosed home to live in.

Part of the attraction is price. The average foreclosure sells for less than its nondistressed neighbor. And they're everywhere. Before the housing crash, distressed properties were generally in seedy or troubled neighborhoods, or were in various states of disrepair. Now, few neighborhoods are "too good" for foreclosures.

Supply and demand also play a role. "There are just fewer things on the market," says Errol Samuelson, president of realtor.com, NAR's website. "That encourages people to look at more options."

The interest in foreclosures is particularly strong in states hit hardest by the crisis, like Florida.

"We're probably ahead of the curve compared with the rest of the country," says real estate agent Welch of Orlando. Far from being deterred, his clients are fighting over foreclosed homes. "If buyers can get a foreclosure, they are glad to grab it. I don't know that I have run into anybody who has looked at a foreclosure and put a stigma on it. They want to get a good price."

Such attitudes are spreading.

"In my neighborhood, right across the street a home was foreclosed, priced in the $500,000 range," says Gary Ricci, a retired court officer from West Peabody, Mass. He was born and raised in the projects in nearby Everett and thought he had left foreclosures a long time ago. Instead, one of his childhood friends from Everett snapped up the property, refurbished it, and now lives there with his wife, Mr. Ricci says.

The more "for sale" signs that go up on foreclosed properties, the more buyers will become familiar with the idea. "Earlier in the cycle, people didn't understand what the process involved," says Mr. Samuelson. "Sometimes even the banks weren't familiar with short sales [sales of distressed homes sold before foreclosure]. Now, people are less scared."

"I think buyers have finally adjusted to foreclosures as a big part of the market and are more willing to accept that reality," Mr. Blomquist says.

Palestinians must seek peace with Israel

July 23, 2012 7:40 am

The "Apartheid State" writer (July 16 letters) needs to read her own letter and correct the personal biases she includes. The Palestinians, since the terrorist Yasser Arafat, have been given many opportunities for their own land but continue to say "no" to peace with Israel.

Since Gaza was given to the Palestinians, they continue to be "governed" by and support the terrorist organization Hamas, they spend the money given them by the West for anti-semitic propaganda, anti-Israel education for their children and for rockets to use against Israel, not for productive purposes like true education or infrastructure to aid in self-sufficiency.

The writer also ignores the fact that the separation wall built by Israel has dramatically reduced the number of terrorist attacks conducted by the Palestinians against Israel. If the writer visited the West Bank, why didn't she comment on the many luxury cars, palatial homes and extravagant night clubs in Ramallah and other West Bank cities?

Is it just me, or does anyone else notice that the Palestinian people seen in the media are well-dressed, wear Nike sneakers and appear to be well-fed? I don't see people carrying buckets of water and living in tents. Nor do I see the Palestinians taking responsibility for their own actions ... it's easier to blame someone else like Israel, a productive country that has built itself from the desert sands via hard work and education.

Until the Palestinian people stop training and educating their children to hate and instead focus their energy and resources on becoming a productive, self-sufficient people versus their singular goal of Israel's destruction, they will never accept peace with Israel.
