Disney Cruise Line 101 for Kids & Teens
1)??? Youth Clubs ? I think that first thing that kids and teens should know are about the youth clubs, these clubs are awesome! I am 13 years old which means I am in ?Edge, they also have the Oceaneer?s Club and Lab and the Vibe. The reason that I love going to these clubs are because of the amount of activities there are to do, I have been in Oceaneer?s Club, Oceaneer?s Lab and Edge, and each time I love it even more. The planned activities are so much fun and I guarantee that you will find something you like. For example; the Oceaneer?s Club offers programs such as; ?Hats off to Peter Pan,? this particular activity has Peter Pan come in and you play games with him. Oceaneer?s Lab has ?Kim Possible: Cruise Control? this is a scavenger hunt around the ship, trying to save the boat and get us to Castaway Cay, Edge offers a Pool Party and Pajama Jam where you play games in the pool and then watch movies and play games in your pajamas. Last but not least, Vibe offers a program called ?Ship Factor? this is where you have to eat a bunch of different mixed up foods to win a challenge. I would suggest checking when these clubs open and close because it changes every day, it would also be a good idea to check where some activities are, sometimes they are on the sports deck, Studio Sea, etc. I literally spend my whole day in Edge when I?m on my cruise because there are so many activities and things to do. My favourite activity to do in Edge is Gender Wars, this is a competition between the boys and girls, the girls get asked boy questions and the boys get asked girl questions, I love this activity and others like this because the counsellors make it so much fun! These clubs on the Dream are so much fun! The first day of the Dream I spent 3 hours in the Oceaneer?s Club and Lab because they had so much to do and so much to see! I loved the Monsters Inc. room and Andy?s Room! I strongly suggest checking these clubs out.
2)??? Pirate Night ? I love this night and I?m pretty sure that every kid likes it to, Pirate Night is a night where there is a deck party, buffet, game shows, character meet and greets, + more! All of the youth clubs offer programs all night that have to do with pirates; they have game shows, trivia, movies, parties, etc. The deck party happens on deck 9 ad lasts for around 2 hours, it includes characters, dancing, singing, and the best part; fireworks! They also have a buffet with everything; Cake, fruit, turkey legs, cookies, chocolate, etc. The dinner on pirate night is also very themed to Pirate Night, the waiters dress up like pirates and each guest gets a pirate bandana. This is a very fun themed night for everyone!
3)??? Mickey Mania ? This is a game show for any age but it is so much fun! Eight people get chosen to play and they have to wear these funny hats and get a team name and colour. This is a game show about all things Disney; movies, theme parks, and characters. They usually show you a video of something and the first team to buzz in gets to answer first. Sometimes they show you a movie clip and you have to write down what happens next. I would recommend getting to the game show 10 minutes early because Studio Sea can fill up very quickly. The youth clubs also do these game shows where only that club is allowed to play. This game show is so much fun and I recommend it to anyone!
4)??? Food ? This one might sound a little funny but trust me, I go up and get food from Pluto?s Dog House and Pinocchio?s Pizzeria all the time! These are located on deck 9 and are usually open all day. ?Pluto?s Dog House offers chicken fingers, hotdogs, hamburgers, tacos, chicken burgers and fries. The fries and chicken fingers are my favourite and I also love the hamburgers. Pinocchio?s Pizzeria obviously offers pizza but they usually have 5 or 6 selections. They always have Cheese, Pepperoni and Hawaiian, but they have daily specials every day, sometimes it is a 3 meat pizza, a nacho pizza etc. I absolutely love the pizza from here and on average have 3 slices a day, the slices are pretty small but you can get as many as you want. The pizza is always being made, so it is always fresh. Deck 9 also has a place called Goofy?s Galley, they have sandwiches, fruit, veggies, etc. Next to Goofy?s Galley is the ice-cream machine, they always have chocolate, vanilla and swirl ice-cream but they have a special flavour every day, like mango or banana. I would suggest checking what time they open and close because you don?t want to go all the way up to deck 9, just to find out that they have already closed. The Dream is a little different, instead of Pluto?s Dog House, Pinocchio?s Pizzeria, and Goofy?s Galley; they have Flo?s Caf? and Eye Scream. Flo?s Caf? has three places within it; Luigi?s Pizza, Doc?s Grill and Fillmore?s Favorites. Luigi?s Pizza obviously has pizza, Doc?s Grill has burgers, hotdogs, fries, etc. and Fillmore?s Favourites has fruits, sandwiches and salads. Eye Scream is the place where you can get ice cream, the theme for this one is Monsters Inc. and the theme for Flo?s Caf? is themed to ?Cars?.
5)??? Movie Theatre ? The movie theatre aboard the Disney Magic is awesome! They usually have a movie showing every 2 hours and the movies are for all different ages, the movies are usually newer and sometimes the movies are still in theatres when they are showing. There is a cart outside the movie theatre that sells popcorn, candy, water, etc. and you can bring any kind of food into the theatre. My favourite time to go to a movie is at midnight because there is usually no one else in the theatre. The movie theatre on the Disney Dream is fantastic! I did not get a chance to watch a movie on the Dream, but I did get to see it. It?s huge and the seats are so comfortable and they have so much leg space! On the first day of the cruise you will receive a piece of paper that shows you all the movies and times that they are playing the whole week. I love going to the movie theatre!

DoubleSight DS-90U
With the popularity of feather-weight laptops growing at a frantic pace we're seeing more portable USB-powered monitors than ever before. One such monitor, the DoubleSight DS-90U ($169 list), takes its place among offerings from Lenovo, AOC, Toshiba, Mimo, and others. This 9-inch monitor is one of the smaller models out there, although the company does make a 7-inch model. With the DS-90U you get good color and dark gray performance in a slim, highly portable chassis, but it can't match the overall performance and bang for the buck that you get with the Editors' Choice Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 ($199.99 list, 4 stars).
Design and Features
Weighing just 16-ounces the DS-90U is the lightest portable monitor to pass through PC Labs to date, but its 9-inch 1024-by-600 screen is also the smallest. By way of comparison, the Lenovo LT1421 sports a 14-inch screen and the AOC e1649Fwu ($139 list, 3.5 stars) has a 15.6-inch screen, and both are 1366-by-768 resolution displays. As such, the DS-90U is clearly not the best choice for small group presentations.
The DS-90U is 9-inches wide, 5.7-inches high and only 1-inch thick (without the stand) and will easily fit into a laptop bag or briefcase. The glossy screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio and is framed by shiny black bezels with a DoubleSight logo on the upper left corner. Around back are a mini-USB port, an on/off switch, and a brightness control which offers the only available picture adjustment. An easel stand resembling a tablet stylus is tucked into a slot on the right side. When inserted in a hole on the bottom of the cabinet it supports the panel like a picture frame.
There's also a screw hole in the center of the cabinet for attaching the included secondary stand (a large thumbscrew is also included). The stand has a glossy black circular base and a tilting mounting arm that allows you to attach the stand in either a portrait or landscape orientation. You'll have to change the actual image orientation in the graphics control applet; unlike the AOC e1649Fwu, the DS-90U does not offer an auto-rotate feature. You can fold the stand up for travel but it does not sit flush with the back of the cabinet and adds considerable bulk to the monitor's slim profile.
The DS-90U comes with a Y-cable (USB), a quick start guide, a black plastic snap-on screen cover, and a CD containing a user manual and the DisplayLink driver. No power cord is required as the monitor is powered by the host's USB port. The monitor worked fine with just one USB connection on my ThinkPad X220 but you may need to use a secondary port if you're connecting to an older PC, hence the Y-cable. DoubleSight covers the DS-90U with a three year warranty.
Performance
The DS-90U delivers deep, rich colors and did a great job of displaying each shade of dark gray on the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test. Small text was clear and legible as well, but the panel struggled to reproduce lighter shades of gray. As a result, highlight detail appeared washed out on my test photo and the three lightest swatches of the 64-Step Grayscale test appeared white. Given the panel's diminutive stature it's not the best choice for a movie screen but if you do decide to watch video you'll have to deal with noticeable motion blur, courtesy of a 30-millisecond (b-w) pixel response.
Off angle viewing is quite good on the DS-90U, at least from the sides. There was very little color shifting or loss of luminance from an extreme side angle but when viewed from the top and bottom the screen darkened considerably and colors were skewed. Keep this in mind when using the monitor in a portrait orientation as the side viewing angle will be quite narrow.
The DoubleSight DS-90U is a slim, lightweight portable USB monitor that you can take anywhere without adding any significant weight to your laptop bag. It offers vivid colors, good dark grayscale reproduction, and crisp text, but its light grayscale performance is wanting. Its $169 price tag is relatively high for such a small screen, especially when compared to the 15.6-inch AOC e1649Fwu ($139 list). That said, if you can spare another $30, the Lenovo LT1421 gets you significantly more screen real estate, a higher resolution, and is a slightly thinner than the DS-90U.

National Journal of Accountancy has published numerous articles in support of cost segregation. Cost segregation identifies applicable components and establishes the value and correct time line for depreciation. Under typical circumstances, depreciation is spread out over as long as 39 years. However, cost segregation applies depreciation to parts of the property in 5-,7- and 15-year increments. This acceleration in depreciation time reduces the income subject to federal taxes. This method does not dictate alternative minimum tax issues. Historically, most depreciation schedules are split between land and long-life property. Long-life property depreciates over 27.5 years for apartments and 39 years for most commercial properties. A cost segregation study can typically allocate 20% to 40% of the improvement basis to short-life categories, and sometimes more. High-income owners typically pay a 35% federal tax rate on ordinary income and a 15% rate on capital gains. The mechanics of reporting the gain on a sale usually allocate most of the gain to capital gains, which is taxed at 15%. A cost segregation study actually reduces the amount of long-life property, which is recaptured at 25% by allocating more of the basis to the 5-,7- and 15-year property. If cost segregation is utilized from inception until a gain on the property is recognized, it can reduce the federal tax rate from 35% to 15% for most investors. The exceptions are C corporations, which pay the same tax rate for either ordinary income or capital gains. Don?t pay more than your fair share of taxes. Take all legal deductions. ?

Samsung announces Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Galaxy Tab 2 in a 10.1 version
Gearing up for Mobile World Congress, Samsung has announced the Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) this evening, to go along with it's 7-inch sibling. The Tab 2 (10.1) has a 1280x800 display, a dual-core 1GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and runs Ice Cream Sandwich. Unlike it's predecessor, it also comes with a slot for an external SDcard. Coming in both 16GB and 32GB versions, in both a wifi and HSPA+ 21 configuration. TouchWiz is also on board, as is a healthy 7,000mAh battery. No word on pricing, but Samsung says this one will go on sale this March in the UK. We'll find out any further details direct from Samsung when we meet with them this week. Personal injury law is sometimes referred to as "tort law." Tort laws operate on the state as well as the federal level to protect an individual's rights.
Although there are many different kinds of torts, they all have three elements in common. If all of these elements are present, then a tort - or a personal injury - has occurred. These elements are:
• A legal "duty" between the plaintiff and the defendant. This duty is often implied or implicit.
• A breach of the legal duty.
• Damages that have occurred as a result of that breach.
One of the implicit laws of our society is that people in our country do not harm one another. By extension, not only should individuals be out of harm's way, their possessions should also be safe from harm.
Under tort law, if your possessions are damaged then the party who is responsible for that damage will be liable for it.
For example: If someone throws a rock through a car window it would be considered to be an intentional act. In addition to being a violation of personal injury law it could also be a criminal offense.
However, if you accidently dropped a rock from your window and it landed on a car, it would also be a violation of personal injury law. However, it would probably be considered as a negligent act rather than being a criminal offense.
When someone violates personal injury law they are expected to remedy the situation. In the eyes of the law the term "damages" describes what the defendant will owe in order to right whatever wrong(s) have been done. In most instances damages are resolved either through a private settlement or through insurance. However, some plaintiffs feel that a settlement offer will not fully compensate them for their losses.
If this situation arises, a trial will usually proceed so the court can determine what, if any, awards the plaintiff will receive.
As you might imagine, it often takes a certain level of legal expertise to carry out a trial in which the victim of a personal injury receives all the compensation that he or she is legally allowed. That is why a victim will usually speak to an attorney who specializes in personal injury law.

Larry Bock: Exploring Deep, Mysterious Realms With Time Warp Scientist Jeff Lieberman
With the human genome decoded, science is poised now to set sights on a more ethereal realm: human consciousness, one of the least understood facets of human cognition.
Deep within this frontier where brain and mind intersect, lie a host of questions and mysteries yet to be fully examined, including what it means to be human; the connection between art, science and creativity; human perception; artificial intelligence; and our relationship with religion, spirituality and the universe.
One researcher who is delving into these worlds with gusto is Jeff Lieberman, an MIT-trained scientist, engineer and artist who says our consciousness makes us who we are in the world, but that often our limitations as humans make us unaware of our potential and true uniqueness. As a result, "You may not be who you think you are," Lieberman told an audience earlier this year at a TEDxCambridge session where he explained the basics of his theories in consciousness.
Our minds are "thought-generating machines," he continues stressing "that the evolutionary utility of our minds is unbelievable," but that negative and counter-productive suffering comes as a side effect of these capabilities, keeping us separated from the world and from being who we were meant to be. "What would happen if we could turn off the machine?," Lieberman asks, "If we could transcend our individual experience of the world?"
Lieberman is currently working on specific testable mathematical hypotheses to further explore such questions, in addition to investigating the use of such technologies as neurofeedback to aid our ability to understand ourselves more deeply and to remove mental roadblocks to perception and self awareness.
Science buffs may know Lieberman best as the host of the show Time Warp on the Discovery Channel where he combines art and creativity with science and technology to help us see beyond the limits of our normal perception. Lieberman will bring his unique perspective on the future of human consciousness to the USA Science & Engineering Festival hosted by Lockheed Martin (the nation's largest celebration of science and engineering) this April in Washington, DC. There, at the Festival's finale Expo, he will conduct interactive presentations that will demonstrate the wonders and limitations of what we know about the burgeoning field of consciousness.
Lieberman, the holder of four degrees from MIT (a B.S. in Physics and Math, and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and Media Arts and Sciences), has gained worldwide recognition for his "technological sculptures," including the Cyberflora, a garden of robotic flowers built with enough artificial intelligence to react when a person enters the room, and for the Motor Learning Robotic Wearable Suit -- robotic clothing which accelerates motor skill learning.
In addition, through his skill in high-speed photography and music, he is helping to pioneer a new genre of music and perception known as "pastoral electroacoustic."
Lieberman is a prime example of the myriad researchers on the leading edge of science and engineering who will be taking part in the USA Science & Engineering Festival to inspire future innovators and educate the public. The Festival's finale Expo weekend celebration, no ordinary event on April 28-29 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, will be replete with a bevy of hands-on excitement in science, including 2,000 exhibits and stage demonstrations, which will culminate the Festival's month-long series of nationwide activities.
In addition to hands-on encounters with other fields of science and engineering, the Expo will also include exciting presentations in the realm of human consciousness, perception and artificial intelligence -- such as the following:
Encounters With Robots. Interact with Ada and Grace, two virtual museum guides from the National Science Foundation who will greet and converse with visitors, including answering questions about exhibits, computer science, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). In another presentation, with Aldebaran Robotics, meet NAO, a fully interactive, versatile, and fun humanoid robot that is able to see, hear, speak, feel and communicate using the most advanced technology.

EAGLE POINT, Ore. (AP) ? Last weekend, 14-year-old Ashley Long told her parents she was going to a slumber party. But instead of spending the night watching videos and eating popcorn two blocks away, she piled into a car with a bunch of her friends and rode to a condo in Medford, Ore., where police say the big sister of one of her friends was throwing a party with booze and marijuana.
After drinking on the drive, and downing more drinks in the condo, it came time for Ashley to take her turn on a tank of helium that everyone else was inhaling to make their voices sound funny.
"That helium tank got going around," said Ashley's stepfather, Justin Earp, who learned what happened from talking to Ashley's friends at the party. "It got to my daughter. My daughter didn't want to do it. It was peer pressure. They put a mask up to her face. They said it would be OK. 'It's not gonna hurt you. It'll just make you laugh and talk funny.'"
Instead, she passed out and later died at a hospital, the result of an obstruction in a blood vessel caused by inhaling helium from a pressurized tank.
It's a common party trick ? someone sucks in helium to give their voice a cartoon character sound.
But the death exposes the rare but real dangers of inhaling helium, especially from a pressurized tank.
Dr. Mark Morocco, associate professor of emergency medicine at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles, said what happens is similar to when a scuba diver surfaces too quickly. A gas bubble gets into the bloodstream, perhaps through some kind of tear in a blood vessel, and can block blood flow to the brain, causing a stroke.
The gas is also commonly seen in suicide kits ? mail-order hoods sold out of Oregon and elsewhere that can be attached to a helium tank by people who want to kill themselves. In those cases, the helium crowds out the oxygen, asphyxiating a person.
Death from inhaling helium is so rare that the American Association Poison Control Centers lumps it in with other gases, such as methane and propane. Only three deaths were recorded in 2010, said spokeswoman Loreeta Canton.
It's important to remind kids that ingesting any substance ? for the sake of getting high or just changing their voices ? can be dangerous, said Frank Pegueros, executive director of DARE, Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
Pegueros said the first defense is for parents to tell their kids about the dangers of certain substances. He said kids need to also ask themselves whether going along with the crowd at a party is worth it.
"Peer pressure is a very potent force," he said. "We've all gone through it growing up."
"It's getting somebody to pause and think and evaluate the situation and determine, is this something that's going to have a bad consequence," he said.
Police have arrested 27-year-old Katherine McAloon, who lived in the condo, on charges of providing alcohol and marijuana to minors. Four men who were at the party have been questioned by police, but have not been charged, said Medford Police Lt. Mike Budreau. More charges may be filed after police turn over their evidence to the district attorney.
Ashley was a goofy, nerdy eighth-grader who struggled with her weight, was just starting to notice boys, got top grades in school, had posters of Justin Bieber all over her room and wanted to grow up to be a marine biologist, said her mom, Loriann Earp. The family moved from Grants Pass, Ore., to Eagle Point about a year ago, and Ashley had just gotten over the difficulty of adjusting to eighth grade in a new school.
Justin Earp said the kids had four wine coolers each in the car, and four mixed drinks at the condo, before they started passing around the helium.
Police said it was an 8-gallon canister, the kind you can buy at many stores. The kids were taking hits directly from the tank.
When Ashley passed out, someone tried CPR. Then they called 911. Paramedics tried to revive her and took her to the hospital.
"About 11:30 we got a phone call from police saying they were doing CPR on our daughter," said Justin Earp.
At the hospital, they were told that Ashley had died.
Her family has set up a foundation, Ashley's Hope, to spread the word about the dangers of inhaling helium.
Loriann Earp feels like her daughter was stolen from her.
"My whole chest is collapsed and my heart is broken," she said through sobs. "I don't understand."

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has advised GTx to stop development of GTx-758 (also known as Capesaris), its oral drug intended for the treatment of men with advanced prostate cancer, after it became apparent that there was an increase in risk for blood clots in men taking active drug compared to those being treated with a placebo.
The company issued a detailed media release which is available on line.
GTx-758 is a drug that was in development for the first-line treatment of hormone-sensitive prostate cancer and also for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer. The clinical hold requested by the FDA (which has already taken effect) has stopped three ongoing clinical Phase II trials. The Company has also suspended further enrollment into these studies. The Company has reported the occurrence of blood clots (venous thromboembolic events? or VTEs) in subjects treated with GTX-758 in patients receiving 1000 mg (or more) of the active agent, and the Company has asked the FDA to consider changes in its clinical development program for GTX-758.
It is not yet clear whether GTx will be able to make appropriate changes to the clinical development program for GTx-758. The Company seems to think that GTx-758 may still prove to be effective and safe at lower doses? for the treatment of men with metastatic, hormone-sensitive or castration-resistant forms of prostate cancer. The ?New? Prostate Cancer InfoLink hopes that the Company will be able to find common ground with the FDA and identify an appropriate method to be able to refocus on evaluation of GTx-758 in these patient populations. However, making such determinations can be time-consuming, and it is not yet clear how many cases of VTEs have occurred in men receiving active drug or in men treated with a placebo.

iPhone and cycling: How to have fun and stay fit
My iPhone is the perfect cycling companion. It entertains, informs and keeps track of where I go and how long it takes me to get there.
February is Health and Fitness Month at Mobile Nations, and my exercise program for most of my adult life has been cycling. Living on Cape Cod, I am treated to some beautiful vistas, ocean views and a fair share of challenging hills. During the warmer months, I can be at the ocean in about seven minutes and then continue for 20 ? 30 miles along the coast.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? More than 2,000 angry Afghans rallied Tuesday against the inadvertent burning of Qurans and other Islamic religious materials during trash disposal at an American air base. They demanded to meet the country's president over the issue and threatened to demonstrate again if their demand was not met.
U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander in Afghanistan, apologized and ordered an investigation into the incident, which he was "not intentional in any way."
The incident stoked anti-foreign sentiment that already is on the rise after nearly a decade of war in Afghanistan and fueled the arguments of Afghans who believe foreign troops are not respectful of their culture or Islamic religion.
Early Tuesday, as word of the incident spread, about 100 demonstrators gathered outside the sprawling Bagram Air Field, north of Kabul in Parwan province. As the crowd grew, so did the outrage.
"Die, die, foreigners!" the demonstrators shouted. Some fired hunting guns into the air. Others threw rocks at the gate of the base.
Ahmad Zaki Zahed, chief of the provincial council, said U.S. military officials took him to a burn pit on the base where 60 to 70 books, including Qurans, were recovered. The books were used by detainees once incarcerated at the base, he said.
"Some were all burned. Some were half-burned," Zahed said, adding that he did not know exactly how many Qurans, the Muslim holy book, had been burned.
Zahed said five Afghans working at the pit told him that the religious books were in the garbage that two soldiers with the U.S.-led coalition transported to the pit in a truck late Monday night. When they realized the books were in the trash, the laborers worked to recover them, he said.
"The laborers there showed me how their fingers were burned when they took the books out of the fire," he said.
Afghan Army Gen. Abdul Jalil Rahimi, the commander of a military coordination office in the province, said he and other officials met with protesters, tribal elders and clerics to try to calm their emotional response. "The protesters were very angry and didn't want to end their protest," he said.
One protester, Mohammad Hakim, said if U.S. forces can't bring peace to Afghanistan, they should go home.
"They should leave Afghanistan rather than disrespecting our religion, our faith," Hakim said. "They have to leave and if next time they disrespect our religion, we will defend our holy Quran, religion and faith until the last drop of blood has left in our body."
Later, however, the protesters ended the rally and said they would send 20 representatives from the group to Kabul to talk with Afghan parliamentarians and demanded a meeting with President Hamid Karzai, Rahimi said.
In a statement, Allen offered his apologies to the president and people of Afghanistan and thanked the local Afghans "who helped us identify the error, and who worked with us to immediately take corrective action."
"We are thoroughly investigating the incident and are taking steps to ensure this does not ever happen again," Allen said. "I assure you, I promise you, this was not intentional in any way."
The governor's office in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan called the incident a "shameful move by some stupid individuals."
Zia Ul Rahman, deputy provincial police chief, said between 2,000 and 2,500 protesters demonstrated at the base.
"The people are very angry. The mood is very negative," Rahman said while the rally was going on. "Some are firing hunting guns in the air, but there have been no casualties."
Police said a similar protest on Tuesday just east of Kabul ended peacefully.
In April 2011, Afghans protesting the burning of a Quran by a Florida pastor turned deadly when gunmen in the crowd stormed a U.N. compound in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif and killed three staffers and four Nepalese guards.
Separately, officials in Helmand province in the south said insurgents beheaded four people Sunday night in Washer district on the charge that they were spies.
"The militants told the local people that they were guilty because they were carrying satellite phones," provincial spokesman Daoud Ahmadi said.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said that the militant group was not involved in the killings.
Also in the south, a NATO service member died Tuesday as a result of a non-battle related injury. The U.S. led coalition gave no further details about the death. So far this year, 44 NATO service members have been killed in Afghanistan.
