Becky Joerger, Fort Ripley, was named the 2012 Distinguished Young Dairy Woman Feb. 4, at the Brickyard in Pierz. She was presented a plaque from the Mid Minnesota Holstein Club.
?It is amazing I was chosen for this honor,? she said. ?I take pride in providing food and wholesome dairy products for consumers.?
Joerger grew up on her parents Bruce and Rosanne Caughey?s dairy property, B and C Dairy Farms, and currently is in business with them and her two brothers, Dan and Mac Caughey. The farm currently milks 58 Holsteins.
Joerger?s job includes raising the calves, milking the cows, managing the heifer barn and keeping the bookwork current.
A few of the activities Joerger is, or has been, part of which attracted the notice of the Holstein Club include being the current Crow Wing County Fair Board president and several years of organizing the Dairy Days cattle show in Crow Wing County which has youths, ages 7 ? 21, showing five different breeds. She has been the treasurer of the Crow Wing County American Dairy Association for 10 years and a Crow Wing County Dairy Princess for four years.
?I have been involved with the Dairy Princess organization for 19 years,? she said.
Joerger is also a lector with St. John?s Catholic Church in Lastrup.
During the Crow Wing County Fair, she promotes the dairy business in the fairgrounds milking facility, answering questions from visitors.
?They are able to see first-hand how a milking operation works,? Joerger said. She also shows her cattle.
At the Minnesota State Fair, she can be found at the Moo Booth.
At B and C Dairy Farms, Joerger promotes registered Holsteins in particular and the dairy industry in general by giving farm tours to students, members of the Brainerd Lakes Senior Center and families who take part in Early Childhood and Family Education through the schools. She has also held dairy judging with the Brainerd FFA chapter at her farm and mentors 4-H dairy exhibitors.
In her spare time, Joerger and her family, husband Josh and son Jerome, love to go snowmobiling and fishing. Whenever possible, they enjoy traveling.
?It is great to be honored for what I love to do,? she said.
