Usain Bolt dashes to record 100m Olympic gold ... - BBC World News

The fastest man in the world Usain Bolt blitzed London in what was the most hotly-anticipated ? and contested ? 100m final of all-time. Bolt?s countryman Yohan Blake came second with 9.75secs, while Justin Gatlin took bronze in 9.79secs. The final attracted the highest-price tickets of all London 2012 sporting events, rising to a maximum ?2,012 ? the last of which sold last week. All eyes were on charismatic 25-year-old Bolt, with many wondering whether his own doubts about his recent form and fitness were a warning ? or just a bluff. Bolt became a superstar by coasting to Olympic gold in Beijing four years ago, setting a world record time of 9.68 seconds. He then broke that a year later at the World Championships in Berlin, finishing in 9.58 seconds. But Bolt was not the nailed-on favourite going into last night?s race that might have been expected in recent years. He has been hampered by hamstring injuries and underwhelming form ? including two defeats this year by his 22-year-old Jamaican training partner Blake. Bolt also failed to defend his 2009 world championship title in Daegu last year after being disqualified from the final for a false start. Blake won that race and is the reigning world champion ? and in their most recent match-up before last night, beat Bolt with a time of 9.75 seconds. He was also one of the slowest qualifiers in Friday?s first-round heats although commentators said he looked like he was holding back.
